Since a long time though; This isn't anything new to WLM... ;)

However, there is nothing much you can do except for either splitting up the file by hand (notepad, etc), or moving the file to another (archive) location or following the instructions given by messenger.

The larger log files get, the longer it takes for certain functions to function (for starters logging itself of course, also reading/showing the previous conversations in a chat window, etc). And the XML logs can get pretty big.... So, although annoying, it is also neccesairly...

Hum.. okay.. weird, I never had that problem though.. maybe cuz of the way msgplus! logs the conversations?

EDIT : I think this is worth suggesting some kind of way to fix this in the next beta tester chat..

Plus! has got nothing to do with how Messenger logs chats though... Both are totally seperate things.

possible, although I very much doubt anything will be done with it because as I said, when the logs are getting huge, things will get slower and slower. Splitting, moving or deleting the logs is needed to ensure a good flow of the program.

(Imagine reading 10MB each time you open a conversation window to simply extract and show the latest chat with that person. Or imagine that messenger always need to read thru 10MB of lines before it can add another line of text to the log, etc...)

I was suggesting this could be done automaticly?

Msgplus! doesn't have a problem with this...

Altough msgplus! doesn't really make 10 MB logs :P

Or you really have to be addicted to msn :P

Anyway, I have that edited xsl file, so I guess it won't delete mine.

If you mean by that like an option which you can turn on and is off by default, then yes, maybe.

But if you really mean automatically then many people will not like that as each has his own preference of where, when and how to save/split/whatever the XML logs (if needed).

True. But there is also a huge difference between adding simple lines of text (like Plus! does) and storing and updating a whole XML style log each time (like Messenger does). The latter is already slower on its own, even when you compare text logs and XML logs of the same filesize...

A line by line pure text log is much easier and quicker to read/update than a XML style formatted log where you each time need to parse and interpret the whole thing to update anything.

The XML logs themselfs are the problem, not the stylesheet (XSL) of how the log must look like when you view it. Everything is still the same logged in the XML logs as before, even if you edited the XSL.

For people that want to know the max size of MSN Messenger's chat log, the answer is 8192 entries...the filesize has actually nothing to do.

I'll try to find the proof in MSN Messenger's Help document...just wait :P

OK Here you go:
quote:
MSN Messenger Help - Save a conversation (Click on "Save every conversation")
MSN Messenger saves a maximum of 8,192 messages to your computer. Once this limit has been reached, you can choose to archive or delete your older messages. Archiving saves your message history as a separate file. Deleting removes your oldest messages to create room for new messages.

RE: Max Size Of Chat Log?! by Timothy003 on 01-15-2006 at 06:12 PM

8,192 messages for the whole chat log folder? I thought it was only for each log.

RE: Max Size Of Chat Log?! by Ezra on 01-15-2006 at 07:01 PM

So choosing archive will split the file...

RE: Max Size Of Chat Log?! by Timothy003 on 01-15-2006 at 07:10 PM

Archiving will just put the stored logs somewhere else where Messenger won't have to deal with them...
