Ok I have had this nano since Christmas last year, it has worked perfectly fine through multiple versions of iTunes and the iPod software. Out of the blue, when I tried to plug the iPod in the other day I received an error (shown below) saying how the USB item was not recognised. It had full battery at the time and iTunes did not connect to the iPod at all.
iPod nano 2gb Windows XP home iTunes 6.0.2.23 iPod updater 10-1-2006 RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Chris4 on 02-04-2006 at 05:57 PM
I've been reading around and the solution for most people was to update the drivers for your motherboard. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by haydos on 02-04-2006 at 06:27 PM I know my motherboard is an Acer L4S5MG/651+ motherboard. I don't know how to check if my motherboard drivers are up to date or how to check them though. (Device manager?) RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by markee on 02-05-2006 at 09:16 AM
There might be a fault with the ipod. Probably a wise idea to send it to get fixed (or replaced). It's free because it's still under warrenty and its also under 6mnths so you don't even have to pay for postage and handling. http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/ <-- work through them. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by haydos on 02-05-2006 at 10:23 AM
quote:Yes I have already tried all of them bar reformtting iPod to the original forms (ie wiping everything). As I said before I cannot do one of those "R's" because it requires the iPod being recognised to work. I'm going to try the cord of a friend's iPod when possible otherwise I will check with the apple store you linked... RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by siaush on 02-06-2006 at 02:04 PM maybe your iPod is bricked on it's dock connector, get it a 'medical check up'. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by haydos on 02-07-2006 at 05:20 AM I took it over to a mates house and plugged it into his computer (with no iTunes/iPod software installed). His computer had no problem recognising that it was an iPod connected leaving me with the conclusion that my USB drives are not working (but only for the iPod). I am going to check all my drivers are updated and if that fails I will take the computer in for a checkup as soon as possible. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by markee on 02-07-2006 at 01:49 PM Thats a good idea and maybe you can also do a system restore to a day before it started to happen (this will also get rid of some stuff that you might have done since the problem started). Hope things work out, keep us posted. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by matty on 02-07-2006 at 02:23 PM
Generally if you get this error it is one of two things RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by haydos on 02-10-2006 at 10:23 AM
Well with the help of Matty (or more he did all the work), the iPod is now working pretty well. Among many attempts to install information files, edit the registry, update drivers, install drivers, uninstall drivers it came down to a lot of work by Matty through Remote assistance. My iPod is now working most of the time that it is plugged into my front USB ports. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by hawtpocket on 12-03-2007 at 06:55 AM Im having the same problem and ive tried EVERYTHING! what do i do?? RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Dane on 12-03-2007 at 09:21 AM
, I had this error once before...except I was still able to access the iPod as a disk...It took me about 36 hours but I figured out what had happened and created an iPod Rescue Disk. At least in my case, the issue was with the iPod and not WINDOWS, a simple iPod Formatting / Reinitialization helped me get mine to work. I'll try to find that disk with the software and tell you what I used if matty hasnt already resolved the issue for you. Try searching Google for "iPod Rescue Software". RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by lbclassics on 12-25-2007 at 11:43 PM Ok i have had no problems with my computer as of today "Christmas" Now i just installed i tunes and connected the ipod nano and got the usb controller error 10 ect... so I would say it is the Ipod not the computer. im replacing it tommorow. I am also having the same problem, but none of the posted fixes work. To make matters worse, this problem is not confined to my iPod, but affects all USB devices I try to use (e.g. camera, external hard drive). RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Aeria on 04-03-2008 at 09:56 PM Well, I ran across a glitch very much like yours. Only mine didn't come up on another computer, it still stood as "Unknown Device". I'm sure you noticed that Apple doesn't know how to organize a webpage as well... ARG! I'm VERY irritated. My iPod broke >.<! Stupid Mac. RE: RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by rockinhardlp09 on 05-20-2008 at 02:41 AM
quote: Okay I have This EXACT issue right now. I really need this fixed ASAP! Can anyone help? RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Jarrod on 05-20-2008 at 02:47 AM
try a different port, RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Aeria on 05-21-2008 at 08:55 PM I went and actually had mine completely replaced. The guy said that a part in the USB for the iPod was broken off. That may also be the problem? RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by slicertool on 12-10-2008 at 10:11 PM
I had a similar issue when using a 3rd party cable. I swapped over to using the apple cable from my other computer and it worked fine at that point. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Shayne on 12-12-2008 at 01:39 PM
Also had this problem for around a year now. I have a first or Second Generation Ipod. What I found that was causing the main problem was the Apple USB Plug. Yesterday I got a new 120GB Classic and used it's plug on my old Nano and straight away it worked without any issues what so ever. RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by Juxe on 12-26-2008 at 06:37 PM I was having the same problem as the OP, my solution was to go to device manager (i'm using XP) and delete everything listed under 'Universal Serial Bus controllers.' Then I clicked the button to search for hardware changes and let Windows reinstall all my USB root hubs and motherboard drivers. After this my iPod worked without an issue. yea i have the same problem and i have literally tried everything and still no luck. =/ RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by matty on 12-30-2008 at 06:13 PM
quote:Excert from a personal message: What you need to do is turn the iPod on (while connected to a back port of a PC [the port has to be a powered port]). When you see the Apple logo press and hold the Play/Pause and Select buttons on the click wheel. This will put the iPod into Disk Mode. Let it charge as needed. The unknown device is generally because the USB port no longer recognizes the powered device. However if this happens on multiple computers (where you receive "Unknown Device") then the USB controller of the iPod is screwed and will need to go in for service. Once the iPod was fully charged and reset the device functioned correctly on the computer. Cheers, Your Resident iPod Expert lol RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error by jnicewonder on 08-24-2009 at 11:31 PM I had this happen with mine as well, and as luck may have it, I was finally able to get it working again. Go in to your device manager, go to your usb devices and delete your usb root hubs. The computer will delete and reinstall automatically, and low and behold my ipod works again. HOpe this helps! |
