Should I wait for Windows Vista? Since features as, SideShow are hardware driven. And a older laptop won't have the external display required.
Or is that feature not that important, and buying a nice laptop $1500-$2000 should do the job even when vista comes out later this year?

Depends on when you need the laptop. If you need it now then don't wait and just buy one. If you can wait then you can wait.

As long as its a decent spec I would think Vista would run on it happily

Indeed, if a highend laptop availible right now can't run Vista, then what would be the point of Vista in te first place? $1500-$2000 will get you enought power.
