"Folder Sharing" disabled by giken on 02-13-2006 at 10:49 AM

Hi all,
this is a trick I found to enable "folder sharing" and other disabled-by-default wlm features, especially for non-american users.

Just login into your passport account profile (www.passport.net) and change your country from your real one to "USA" in the personal data section, then save and exit.

Now log off and login again in wlm and you will find all options available, including folder sharing and all the grayed out options in the settings menu (video carousel for example).

I think this trick can be useful especially for testers because mp!l is intended to be tested on full-working version of wlm to find how many bugs we can ;)

I tried this trick myself and it works like a charm (I'm italian)

:D

This works for everthing so i havent reverted back to India after the 250 mb on hotmail deal. Thats how i got into testing for windows live mail .... i think *-)

The thing is that .... i still dont have sharing :S
It still says that my computer doesnt support file sharing ..... got any ideas ??

Is there something like a minimum requirements thing that i havent been able to find :S

Well it matters whart kind of format you used to format your hard drive, if you used fat32 then Folder Sharing will not work, but if you used NTFS it should.

If you are talking about normal file sharing check your setting throgh and check your Anti-virus/Anti-spyware/Firewall program to see if you enabled some ports ect.

I don't know if this is 100% but bere with me

I didnt care last time i formatted cause i'm the only person who actually does major stuff on this pc. All other users only do minor stuff .....
Now i know why i regret having fat32 tho id rather have that and save my data if there is a crash :-/

But I heard that fat32 cannot support files 15GBs in size, plus if you have NTFS you should just compress the disk drive. Fat32 is already compressed so no need to worry just some draw backs.

Since when does NTFS magically make you lose data?

No, in fact, fat32 doesn't have any form of compression at all :/

Is there a way to reformat your hard drive to ntfs without losing any data?

I don't think so, just back up your user account on a DVD then reformat. I think there might be a way to trick WLM into thinking you have NTFS, but I'm not sure.

Edit: ShawnZ got the answer

run the CONVERT tool. but you can't do it on your main hard drive, you'll need to put yours in another computer.

Not that i know of (i think i've done it like that myself once way back too). If the drive is in use it will start converting on next reboot.

How to Convert FAT Disks to NTFS
Ofcourse it's always recommended to back up your data.

P.S i updated my post, i forgot the command itself...sowwy :P
RE: "Folder Sharing" disabled by Ezra on 02-13-2006 at 11:30 PM

just start your computer with a bootdisk with convert on it ;)

No need to shift hard disks, did it this way myself on my old computer, worked like a charm! :D

EDIT: BTW, you can't go back from NTFS to FAT32 :P. If you want that you have to reformat, but why would you want to go back to FAT32? :P

I made one for you :)

Just unzip it to a floppy and reboot your computer, and everything should work.

When your computer boots, just type "convert C: FS:NTFS /X" or something like that ;) (without the "" ;))
