Broadband Problem by Chris4 on 02-18-2006 at 03:42 PM

I'm having problems with my internet connection.

It started to not work yesterday morning and ever since I have been trying to fix it.

It says I have "Limited or no connectivity" (see below)

And also, I'm not receiving anything:

They recommend that you pull the power cable out of the back of the modem, wait 30 seconds then plug it back in; but it doesn't help. I still get "Limited or no connectivity". Then it says it's "Acquiring network address" (below) but then goes to back to "Limited or no connectivity".

When I click on details, this is all that appears:

I also tried uninstalling it then installing it again but it wouldn't find the modem! And I tried absolutely everything so I had to do system restore! Disabling then enabling doesn't help either.

My ISP is NTL and my broadband connection is 1MB
Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. I'm at my dad's at the moment

go to Network Connections, right click the connection and go Properties, Click Internet Protocol TCP/IP, Properties.

is the IP all set right? try setting it to Obtain IP address automatically, because you have no default gateway or DNS set

I'm sure that's what it's set to.

Edit: Yup, it is

By the way I'm putting screenshots onto my MP3 player from my pc, running to my dads place, then posting them on my dad's pc :P

This is a known bug in Windows XP Service Pack 2. If haven't installed Microsoft patch yet, then do it now:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?F...7c8&DisplayLang=en

After that download and run this registry fix. Type following lines for example in Notepad and save it as FixReg.reg. After all this, execute it.

code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec]
"AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule"=dword:00000002

Now you have to reboot.

There are also other causes for this problem. List of them and solutions for them can be found at this site.
RE: Broadband Problem by Chris4 on 02-18-2006 at 04:37 PM

Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Done exactly as it said.

Installed the patch, restarted then ran the registry editor file (below) then restarted again.

On the site it has some other causes for the problem, I'll try some of them.

Thanks.

You could try this XP SP2 command which resets the winsock keys.

Start -> Run -> type cmd

In the command window, type netsh winsock reset catalog and press enter.

Then after a reboot, the connection may be working again.

Thanks alot but didn't help.

I also asked on ntl:hell [link] and followed their instructions. Seems I have to phone an NTL engineer to come and fix it. :(

Thanks anyway.

Try doing this.

Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

For more information about how to back up the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
1.    Click Start, and then click Run.
2.    In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.    In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4.    When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP
1.    Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2.    Click Install.
3.    Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4.    Click Have Disk.
5.    Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6.    On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
7.    Restart the computer.

NTL is rather dodgy :P  , have you tried connecting via USB port instead of ethernet?  NTL seems to store the first network card address (MAC address) you use.  Phone them up and request they clear the MAC address incase its been corrupted or something.

RE: Broadband Problem by hypedupmonkey on 02-19-2006 at 02:00 PM

Some of my friends are on NTL and it is a pain in the neck,
My mum wants to change to NTL yet I won't let her for obvious reasons.

In the future, I suggest you look into a new ISP my friend, I am with Wanadoo UK and apart from two problems;
• Their server was down and we weren't recieving the DSL connection via the phoneline
• (My behalf) My stupid Wireless Router/Modem had problems with iTunes 5 which cut me off the internet until realising needing a firmware upgrade for the modem.

Wanadoo UK has always served us well, £22.99 a month I think we're paying for 1mb speed and 6gb download limit. For a one-off charge of £20, you can get it upgraded to 2mb and then once it is available in your area, 8mb.

Thanks alot Ghost_Stalker. If that doesn't work then I give up.

Yes I just tried using a USB cable a minute ago and didn't change anything, unfortunately.

I'll phone them up and tell them that, thanks.

I'm paying £17.99 a month for 1mb broadband and no download limits :P But the problem is, you have to pay a connection fee for changing to a different company. 8o|

The no download limit is okay, but with all the connection problems and such my friends get, I personally don't see the point of NTL. Changing to a different company charging fee, WTF?
Your disconnecting from them and the new company should take care of that, Don't see why NTL should get paid for it.
RE: Broadband Problem by Chris4 on 02-19-2006 at 07:58 PM

Tried what you said Ghost_Stalker, but didn't do anything unfortunately. :(

Nevermind hypedupmonkey, thought you had to pay a connection fee, you know for them to install it etc. Plus don't have a BT line :P

RE: Broadband Problem by Chris4 on 02-20-2006 at 09:42 PM

Found out that I accually got disconnected by NTL (without them telling me!) for a "bill we had not payed". Cheque got lost in post :S

Thanks for all your help and sorry to waste your time *-)

Hey no problem. It happens... If you had called NTL asking for support, then they should have told you

Yeah. First I phoned Broadband Technical Support, told them I had tried everything to get it working, then after all that, he said "oh, your account has been suspended" and put me through to Customer Services, then they told me why it was suspended.

Ended up getting my grandad to phone up and have a moan for them to connect it again.

Ah well, all is fine now :)
RE: Broadband Problem by Hank on 02-22-2006 at 02:42 AM

why was it suspended?
