The purpose is to show how strong the Gecko engine is together with the new technology. But I doubt it will ever make it in a fully, widely-used internet browser. Probably something that will be used in games and special effects in films.

It's a technology in Windows Vista. Most application windows are grabbed as textures live. The desktop is also an interactive texture. It's all displayed in a 3D accelerated environment in realtime. The workspace isn't bitmap anymore, its a DirectX environment.
