Im not sure what i did but i kinda disabled all emotions...the emoticons in my name arent showin, just the shortcut eg: : ) won't change to 
...HELP

if you have messenger plus! insatlled (which im assuming you do)
then this is often a common "problem" though is very easy to solve.
all you have to do is click to veiw contacts by display name in the MSN messenger window.
and also
you may need to disable to "rename contacts" check box in the messenger plus! preferences.
