Ok I've been visiting this forum for years and in the past few months the idea has crossed my mind about a new plugin.  I never posted my idea because I figured it was already done, however I searched and researched and came up with nothing.

Anyways this is my idea.  When you get a message obviously the persons window appears in the taskbar, and it flashes right?...Well if you leave that open it obviously stops flashing...now what if you could tell the current status of that person just by looking at your taskbar?  Here are some photoshopped pictures to help explain my idea.



What does everyone think of this idea?

I totally agree, this would be really useful.

Maybe something for Patchou to include on Plus! Live

Thats exactly what I was thinking in the back of my head.   I know nothing about programing but this would be a useful and fun feature to have an official place in Plus!

Its not hard to do I will see what I can come up with.

Hmmmmm...I'll put my idea in writing today.  Photoshop my 'vision' tommorow for all to see!

Note how in my illustration on the first page there is only one 'MSN Guy' for lack of a better word.  Now, if it was multiple conversations, just have multiple MSN Guy's....like a drop shadow.  Does that make sense?

Its great hear so many people interested!  Especially TB and other notables.

I honestly think that anyone not using the tabs would greatly benefit from such a feature. It would tell you right off the bat if the contact is online or not. Makes things easier for you.

Anyhow, more ideas for consideration.  Even if you are using tabbed convos would it not be easy to keep the same (original illustration) concept?  We all know (or should know) that if you are chatting to lets say x number people, you click on one tab and that person appears as one taskbar item correct?  Now do whatever you programming gurus do and make the status of that contact appear as the corresponding MSN Guy status icon. 

When you Ctrl+Tab, or click on another tabbed convo in the window the same taskbar item changes to display the new contact that you are now chatting with.  Once again, change the new contacts MSN Guy icon to that of his/her current status...

I want to make a good positive impact here, and earn a reputation for being precise and detailed with my ideas.

Here is the illustration:



Pretty straight forward.  Taskbar to the right is the 'Multiple MSN Guy' concept.  And the new idea is on the left...as you can see there is a ² beside the msn guy.  That could symbolize any multi-user conversations, have the number change to match the number of users active in that conversation.

This can even be adapted in the original idea. 
For example, lets say you are in a tabbed conversation with 3 people.  The taskbar will show the name of the active contact, along with their status (as discussed), and a number as seen in the illustration to the left.  In this example that number would be ³

It would be even nicer to use the original conversation icon with the number added on it, so it also looks nice in Messenger skins. But that would be a lot harder I guess.

I've got some good news and some bad news. First of all the bad news: TB will NOT program this feature into SP3.

The good news: I will! To be honest, I've already done it! It looks perfect I can say. The conversations with multiple people don't have the number included, it was too difficult to do that, so those conversations will all have the same icon. See the attachment for a screenshot. Of course an offline image is also included, but I wasn't able to have that in this picture too, because the test account I was using has only got 3 people in the contact list.

I hope you'll like the feature, but I'm sure you will.

Ps: StuffPlug 3 is really going to be a nice piece of software!

If you mean I should use the original WLM icons, I already do that. Those icons you see are runtime grabbed from msgsres.dll, so this will perfectly work with skins, and of course if MSN does another graphics update.

It's very difficult to edit icons with the Windows32 API, and doing so would require a lot of hacking around. I really think that that'd be too much work for a simple feature like this...

Wouldn't work with skinning etc. And like TB said, too much work for such a "simple" feature. Wait till you see the rest.

Sound easier then it is. Image someone changes his/her name, then the window text will be changed by MSN and the number of the amount of contacts will disappear.
To avoid that, you should make some kind of hook to know wheter the window text is changed etc. Too much work for now...

Btw, if something is possible with mess-patch doesn't mean it is easy to do!
