Probably not really Plus!' fault.

You probably didn't fully reinstalled Windows as it previously was.
Always fully update Windows (in any situation). Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install every patch listed there. After that is done go again to that site and rescan Windows once more and install the available fixes (some fixes are only available when others have been installed). Repeat this process until no more bugfixes/updates are available.

all updates installed now and no difference, anything else to try

Maybe you hadn't a completely up-to-date Windows installation when the logs were created. Though it "shouldn't" be an issue...

Also, the file might be really corrupted (can occur if you had errors on your hard disk. This might not be visible at first, but can cause such stuff to happen when copying files.)

A small check you can do is to open the file in notepad. If you don't see all garbled text with the first characters being "MPLE1<<" then it isn't a real encrypted messenger plus! log file indeed.

Otherwise, send the file (together with your password!) to mplus [at] patchou.com so that Patchou can check the file out.

If you are using Messenger Plus! 3 Encrypted Chat Logs, the extension should be *.ple.  You could try renaming the extension to *.ple instead of xml

Nope, Unless theres something uber important in those log files, i'd say just chuck um and forget about it.

renaming a file doesn't alter its format. Since the file didn't start with those characters at the beginning, it is clear that it isn't an encrypted messenger plus log (.ple file) named wrongly.

XML logs are NOT Messenger Plus! logs. They are logs from MSN Messenger itself. Plus! has got nothing to do with them.

So, of course you're going to get a message that the log isn't a Plus! encrypted log:
1) - The log is not encrypted
2) - It is a MSN Messenger log, not a Messenger Plus! log

To open XLM logs simply open them in Internet Explorer, or open them via MSN Messenger itself (Right click contact > View Message History)

;)

-----------

*.XML => MSN Messenger logs (are never encrypted)
- can be viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer (or any other browser which fully supports XML viewing with XSL style sheets)
- can be edited using any XML editor
- can be edited using any text editor. eg: notepad
- can not be encrypted

*.TXT => Messenger Plus! text logs
- can be viewed and edited with any (unicode supporting) texteditor. eg: notepad
- can be viewed with Messenger Plus! log viewer
- Are not encrypted

*.PLE => Messenger Plus! encrypted logs
- can not be viewed, nor edited, with an editor
- can be viewed with Messenger Plus! log viewer provided you have the correct password to decrypt them
- Are encrypted
