Antivirus by Weyzza on 05-02-2006 at 06:44 AM

I'm thinking to change my antivirus, but before I do that I need your little help.

I am currenty using Norton Antivirus 2004, and I'm really pleased with that.
I have never had any problem, and everything works great.
But the problem is, it has many processes running in the background.
Processes: CCAPP.exe, CCEVTMGR.exe, CCSETMGR.exe, NAVAPSVC.exe, NPROTECT.exe, SAVSCAN.exe, synlcsvc.exe and SymWSC.exe
So, there are at least 8 NAV processes if I listed them all correctly.

Maybe it's true that some people say that Norton slows your computers down. Well, it doesn't slow my computer down, but it sure eats many resources.

I just want to know the number of processes other antivirus software have.
It'll be great if you can tell me total mem usage of the antivirus, especially McAfee Antivirus.
If you are using NAV 2006, can you tell me the total mem usage too? Just for the comparison.
When I was writing this thread, NAV used about 38k of RAM on my computer.

Thanks.

Edit:
I should've made myself clear :p
I do not want free antivirus, simply because I want to get reliable one.
I don't want to get a problem and say, "That's a free one, what do you expect?" :p

I can't tell you the exact memory usage of McAfee Antivirus, but I have the software package here at home and the mem usage is much lower than that of Norton IMO, it runs very smoothly, even when I used to have 512Mb RAM.

Considering how new the software is, the minimum specs are quite good:

CD-ROM Drive
Microsoft Windows XP, 2000, Pro, ME, 98
32MB RAM
65mb hdd space
Pentium 133MHz CPU

:p

And the software is McAfee?

I'm sorry, but you sound like talking about different things :p

RE: Antivirus by Chris4 on 05-02-2006 at 06:55 AM

I'm using AVG Antivirus and the 1 process is using 5k of memory usage, compared to the 38k of memory usage Norton AV is using.

I don't bother with any others because I'm happy with AVG, so I reccomend it. :)

I am talking about McAfee Internet Security Suite (which includes the Anti-Virus, I just install the Anti-Virus & Firewall alone and it's very good software :))

An antivirus can't possibly have only one 5k-process, can it?

Can you check really quick how many processes you currently have? Just out of curiousity.

I don't have it installed currently, but I know that when I have it installed, I can run games like Counter-Strike: Source & Doom 3 really well, and software runs perfectly fine, opens fast etc.

lol @ the crappy spelling by me, not sure what I was thinking

I use McAfee, but only the anti-virus. There are 6 processes, but they each take up about 9000K each

Can you tell me the number of running processes and total memory usage?

I'm not interested in knowing different kinds of brand of antivirus.
I'm not interested in knowing which antivirus is "the best."
I want to compare memory usage of each antivirus.

Pardon my caps lock, but PLEASE READ THE THREAD STARTER'S POST. Gosh...
btw, I'm not too fond of people who don't know iexplore.exe is a process of Internet Explorer

This thread is different with any previous antivirus threads in this particular forum.

Yeah, that's I want to know (the antivirus).
More than 50k? That's quite big for an antivirus, isn't it?
Do you have the McAfee Security Center (or whatever it's called) installed too by any chance?
