MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-24-2006 at 04:50 PM

Hey,

I need to buy and new MP3 player I thinking of getting the IPOD Nano 1 GB white one.  What do you guys think is the IPOD that good or is something else a better choice.  I don't mind the battery life being 15 hours because I only listen about 2 hours a day or less.   I'm going today so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well i say yes!

I have an Ipod Nano 4GB and i love it... and i listen to it whenever im not at my computer!

but get a case for it as they seemed to get scratched very easily

RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-24-2006 at 05:21 PM

Interesting.  So then why is everyone buy ipod if they are not that good?

RE: MP3 Suggestions by user27089 on 05-24-2006 at 05:25 PM

Everyone is buying ipods because they're fashionable, that's about it.

They make you use itunes aswell which is really annoying, so basically it messes up with your media library etc. Which is amazingly annoying.

I'd go for a cheap 1gb mp3 player, one that you just stick into your computer with a usb and drag the files you want on there onto it.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by wj on 05-24-2006 at 05:29 PM

I've never had a problem with the three differnt iPod's I've owned. I even bought one for my Dad for his birthday as well as one to run the hold music at my work.

They are great little mp3 players, The only bad things I've heard are anti-apple sentament and alike.

The most common complaints:
They Scratch eaisly
Every MP3 Player I've ever owned has scrathed eaisly. Buy a little mylar protector for the screen, Adds an extra $10 but you eliminate the problem.

The battery doesnt last very long
Most MP3 Players with rechargable batteries dont last all that long. Given the iPod lasts someone less then other, Still, 10+ hours is more then enough for the longest plane ride. If that doesnt suffice, Just pickup an external power adapter or battery pack.

Your stuck with iTunes
It works. I cant say that about the mp3 players I've owned and there software or wmp. But if your really adamently aginst iTunes, You can always use winamp with a iPod plugin or if your using Linux, Banshee has native iPod support.

You can only buy music from ITMS
The iTunes Music Store is the largest online music store (for downloads that is) and has the best (if not close to it) pricing out there. Besides, the other services still restirct you to approved mp3 players which are ussually as expensive as an iPod. It's the whole Gillette Razors business model. Give away the razor, Sell the blades.

iTunes screws up your music library
Not if you tell it to leave your music alone. As long as your entire library isnt in WMA format, iTunes wont touch it. Besides, Even if it does, It's keeps everything nice a clean as well as properly organized.

I still recomend the iPod, Being the most stable and robust (Mine runs Linux :-P) mp3 player I've ever toyed with, I really wouldnt go back to the other companies. They have 80% of the mp3 player market share for a reason, and it's not because the iPod is fashonable. It's because it works.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by t1a0s on 05-24-2006 at 05:48 PM

I agree, defniately go for an ipod, but if you're getting the nano buy a cover for it. I bought one just after they came out and I havent had any problems with it at all, gread piece of hardware.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-24-2006 at 05:51 PM

do I HAVE to use Itunes if I buy an IPOD? I have mabye 500mb of songs that I wanna transfer over that I didn't buy from ITUNES just stuff I ripped from my CD Collection.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by t1a0s on 05-24-2006 at 05:55 PM

You dont have to use iTunes to listen to music on your computer, you just need to use it to put music onto your iPod, or you can also use Winamp with an iPod plugin. iTunes is a good music player and I've been very happily using it for a year now.

It's brilliant for an iPod as it was made to be used with an iPod, and they integrate seamlessly. It's the best thing to use if you update you iPod regularly.

They will most likely transfer over just fine. Just let iTunes find all your music and it should add it all to it's library automatically.

Apparent from the fact that the screen is prone to scratches, there is nothing wrong with iPods, except the price. An iPod nano is upwards of £100 for a few Gb, whereas you can get 20-30 Gb MP3 players for £120-220. I got a Philips HDD 120 from Ebay for £100, and it's ace! 20 Gb, inbuilt microphone, and the ability to record directly into it.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by Reaper on 05-24-2006 at 06:07 PM

iPod Shuffle isn't that bad. Have a look at those.

Please, oh Please work on some proper english.

All I will say in response to that, You get what you pay for.
RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-24-2006 at 06:43 PM

I don't want an IPOD Shuffle because there is no screen, it would be hard to go through each song without seeing it on the screen and my memory isn't that great to remember what order the songs are in.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by wj on 05-24-2006 at 06:50 PM

You are probably best off with a iPod Nano, Either the 1gb or 2gb.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-24-2006 at 08:15 PM

Honestly speaking no one really needs more then a 1gb of music on a mp3 (at least I don't)

I've got 8gb on my iPod, Actually 4gb of mp3's and 4gb of mp4 Videos!
RE: MP3 Suggestions by rav0 on 05-25-2006 at 08:07 AM

You won't listen to 8 GB in one trip out, most of it just sits there.

I also recomend a cheap mp3 player, one that you just stick into your computer with and drag the files you want on there onto it.

Apple says that you must use iTunes (there are some hacks to not use iTunes). You can use music that's not from ITMS, but you must import it into iTunes, but it rejects most files (mp3s are fine (for now :dodgy:)). iTunes also likes crashing.

iDon't

i suggest u get something with 10gbs because u can have it for years and be able to fit all your music. it also depends on your budget because u can get a fairly cheap 10gb hard drive or a 6gb flash but much more expensive
RE: MP3 Suggestions by Supersonicdarky on 05-25-2006 at 12:06 PM

and that is why you hack your mp3 player to have it operate as a normal data storage device

RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-25-2006 at 01:16 PM

Does the IPOD Nano play videos to?

1) SonicStage is not needed, it's optional (FOR CD-MP3 players)
2) They don't brake constantly, all the MP3 players i had have been Sony and i would say they are the best! Excelent battery life, and good quality. They stopped working because they have suffered a lot of hits, that's all.

Anyways, if you don't want a big-sized CD-MP3 player then go for an IPod.
RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-25-2006 at 02:36 PM

You can use Winamp with the iPod Plugin. Also iTunes accepts most file formats. Though it will convert them to AAC or MP3 depending on your settings.

It's also ANNOYING as all heck to have to unload and load new music onto my mp3 player every time i want a new playlist.
RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-26-2006 at 01:10 PM

I know a sony Mp3 player has 20GB now thats loads!

RE: MP3 Suggestions by user27089 on 05-26-2006 at 06:06 PM

A friend from school has one of those Sony Beans, at first I thought they were really big, but they're actually quite small and are pretty cool. They also hold a nice number of songs and have a nice little display on it too :).

Some players hold up to 40gb.
RE: MP3 Suggestions by Zephyr on 05-26-2006 at 06:17 PM

My friend has i Sony 20GB mp3 player. I think it's this one here. Sony NW-A3000B

It's really nice, i've used it and my friend says he's had no problems with it and it has a great battery life.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by saralk on 05-26-2006 at 06:23 PM

iPods are good MP3 players, and iTunes is good music software.
The only problem I have with iTunes is that there is no option to move music into iTunes' filing system, only copy the files, so basically I have two copies of a load of music all over the place.

However, the only problem I have is that now I had an iPod I have spent about £300 on music from iTMS, and my iPod fell out of a hole in my pocket and i lost it, so I am basically stuck with saving up for an iPod as my next MP3 player, otherwise I will have basically wasted £300.

RE: MP3 Suggestions by NiteMare on 05-26-2006 at 06:28 PM

Get an 8-track player:P

Mine fell out of my coat pocket when i put my coat down somewhere. I didn't realise till way after that it wasn't there. :( So i'm saving up for a new one as well. And my ipod with itunes was great, i never had any problems which is why i'll be buying another one. Lucky i've got a job for the money though.
RE: MP3 Suggestions by YourNeibour on 05-26-2006 at 06:48 PM

don't you have your own music on your ipod? (meaning not bought from itunes)

What are you on about wj? There is nothing wrong with my English! Please, oh Please explain.
If you get what you pay for then iPods should be twice as good as everything else, because they cost twice as much! They're perfectly good I just don't think they win on value for money.

I agree that 10Gb is a good size, because you can fit plenty of music on it and you don't need to keep changing it. Unfortunately, when I looked, there seemed to be a lack of MP3s with more than 6Gb but less than 20Gb.
