do you know what all those wireless taxes you pay are? by guanako on 06-01-2006 at 08:57 PM
Government Fees and Taxes
Federal Excise Tax 1.47
Federal Universal Service Fund .99
State Sales Tax 3.88
Relay Service Device Fund .07
State 911 .65
Regulatory Programs Fee* .86
this waht i pay USD
see all that when you look at your bill it really doesnt matter but once u think about it, its like every other tax that will keep increasing and you dont know where its gonna go. so on my cellphone companie i got this newsletter from them with My Wireless info on it.
this website has some really good information about wireless taxes, some stuff that some of us would wanna know just for the record, something like:
In too many cases, your local or state government will raise your wireless taxes for a particular purpose – say, improving 9-1-1 safety systems – and then use the money for something totally different. Take a look at the 9-1-1 fee you pay every month on your wireless bill. Those taxes were supposed to improve emergency services when you use your wireless phone to call for help. Unfortunately, in some states these funds ended up paying for things like dry cleaning and office furniture
When your wireless bill comes every month, do you ever look at all the taxes you’re paying? Innovation and competition in the wireless industry has pushed prices down over the years. However, taxes imposed by every level of government – from your city to the federal government – are eating up your savings and threatening to limit your freedom to communicate affordably.
By joining MyWireless.org, you can learn about wireless issues, voice your support or opposition to proposed wireless taxes and regulations, and help promote the innovation, affordability and accessibility of wireless services. Together, we can make a difference with policymakers and regulators that protect our wireless future and our right to be heard.

Funny you would bring that up.
The federal telephone excise tax has a completely ridiculous story behind it (it was enacted over 100 years ago to help fund Spanish-American war) and just last week, the feds announced they will stop collecting it (as well as offer a refund for the last 3 years worth with 2006 income tax returns).
You can read about it here.
