Wireless Access Point by Jhrono on 06-19-2006 at 03:25 PM

Hi guys,

I have a Linksys WAG54G router (802.11g/b and 4 RJ45 Ports)  on the library, my desktop with an USB 802.11g Adapter and my father's laptop with a Belkin (don't know the model) PCMCIA 802.11g Adapter, which roams around the house.

My room is right above the library, so I get a really good speed all the time.
The problem is the laptop. My father often uses it on the living room which is about 5-10 meters away with 2/3 walls on its way. The speed gets really low, down to 1Mbps most times :(

So what I'm thinking is if a Wireless Access Point connected through an ethernet cable to my router would be able to provide wireless access on the living room, so I'd have good signal strength all over the place ?

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Johny

i dont really understand your question, but, if you can get an external antenna, it would reaallly help reception... you could try and relocate the router inside the library, sometimes a single movement that seems insignificant helps alot..

Re-built my question :

By the way, what do you mean by external antenna ?

does it have one of this [similar] sticking out of the laptop? see image:

No, if it's a PCMCIA card it isn't supposed to 8-)..

RE: Wireless Access Point by Voldemort on 06-19-2006 at 03:49 PM

There are also pcmia cards with external antennas....  you could make you own cantenna with a pringles can... http://www.binarywolf.com/249/pages/bwpringlescantenna.htm
its a directional antenna... you make it, connect it to the pcmia card,  and point it at the library and you get a nice gain for a really cheap amount....[or, if the linksys router antenna is detachable, you can connect it there and point at the living room]
Try moving the router inside the library to another place, and point the antenna in different waves..

Ok, NO. lol

I believe an Access Point would be better, so any help on the initial matter would be good. Thanks

Ok :P that antenna is simple and good... took me 2 min and an usb adapter to make it....

I think that the other access point will help, but not much, it would still have to pass 2/3 walls....
i think relocating the router would be better... you could try it...

Read my FIRST post again please.. I said I would connect the router to the access point through an ethernet cable.

Could you rephrase your question please. I'm not sure that I understand.

PS the wireless range you're getting right now is atrocious.

RE: Wireless Access Point by Jhrono on 06-20-2006 at 12:38 PM

I want to connect my router which is on the library to an access point through an ethernet cable, and I want to know if the access point would be able to 'broadcast' the connection from the cable ..

Thats quiet common actually due to the way the signal is sent you are sometimes better to be further away than closer.

The signal I beleive is sent out like a radar pulse and this is why black spots are created - one beings near the router itself - I will try to find a diagram to explain what I mean - I'm not very good with explanations.

You have the same set up as me.

maybe you need a wireless range expander

but a regular wireless access point should do the trick from a router if you want it wired.

I don't want it wired, I want the access point to deliver wireless connection from a wired connection received from an ethernet cable. Is that possible?
RE: Wireless Access Point by Voldemort on 06-20-2006 at 02:32 PM

yes yes yes yes yes yes!! it is possible..

I meant wired between the router and wireless access point... as you stated in your first post:

and yes... what you want should be possible as Voldemort has stated.. (many times :p )
