Pluslive - logging by lysp on 06-25-2006 at 02:59 AM

Finally installed plus today.

One issue i've noticed which seems to be a reduction in options since the last version is the logging feature.

Previously i've logged all my conversations into a single text file email@address.txt.

Now there are options to put it in a directory based on date, or a directory based on email, but no option not to group them.

I like my logs to be in a single file with no splitting, for example if im trying to find an address/url/phone number has sent me i can look through one file instead of 1 file per month.

Is there any way to change this back to how it previously worked?

Also is there an option to turn the unicode saving off. All my conversations are in english and i dont need to save things in text files that are 3 times the size (due to the byte saving).

Thanks

RE: Pluslive - logging by -_Majin_- on 06-25-2006 at 03:29 AM

The problem I'm having is that the chat logger isn't saving ANY conversations, despite changing the settings, which I've grown tired of fooling around with. As well, several of my contacts have had the same problem and have decided to switch back to 7.5 with the previous version of Plus!.

Since I see no explanation on the forum on how to resolve this, I'll have to assume most people aren't going to bother with the new versions, or care whether or not it's explained later on. But it would be nice if someone could explain how to set the logging to work EXACTLY as it did with Plus! 3.6.

RE: Pluslive - logging by Rhalph on 06-25-2006 at 03:49 PM

Hi all!
I have switched from Msn Messenger 7.5 to Windows Live Messenger today, and updated Messenger Plus (by uninstalling/reinstalling it).

I have the same problem than Majin (who is banned ? ôO). Messenger Plus doesn't log anymore...
I've tried several things like changing the path where the files are stored, or changing the formats...

But it doesn't work. For a given contact (let's say guy@hotmail.com), the log file (guy@hotmail.com.txt) is created, but it remains empty. I cannot move it while this contact window is open, as if the file was locked. When I close the contact window, the file is deleted.

If I try to save the logs in the same directory than before (so, the old "guy@hotmail.com.txt" log file is already there), it creates a "guy@hotmail.com (2).txt" file when I open the contact windows, and this file of course remains empty. It is deleted when I close the contact windows. "guy@hotmail.com.txt" remains unchanged.

I also tried to use the html format, but it's the same problem (the files seem to be locked, and no log is written into them - they are deleted when closing the contact window).

So, anyone has an idea?

Thanks in advance :)

No idea how to solve this, personally.  But I did want to add that I have this problem as well.  No logging seems to happen, including saving the events log.

I have reinstalled and changed the settings, but it doesn't seem to have an effect.

Hopefully there will be a solution soon! :)
RE: Pluslive - logging by Rhalph on 06-25-2006 at 05:09 PM

Wait... I have set my status to a custom one, and the automessage was not sent when someone talked to me!
And when I typed "/online" to get back online and to remove the custom status, my contact really received "/online", and my status was kept to "away".

I wonder if the problem doesn't only concern the message logs... Maybe Messenger Plus is inactive ? I mean, none of the features seem to work, the only thing is that there IS a "Plus!" menu in my Live Messenger windows, I can use the menus, but the behavior of Windows Live Messenger doesn't seem to be modified by Messenger Plus...

Edit: ok, it seems related to this post. I'm going to post there...

RE: Pluslive - logging by DeatzoSeol on 06-26-2006 at 12:42 PM

I have the same chatlog issue as Lysp and I hope it can be solved as soon as possible :-s

I also like to know whether there is a possibility to save logs both as plain text and as XHTML...
(And, too, how to split WLM-chatlog-XMLs for archivation?)

That's not necessary. Use Windows Explorer Search to get your job done.

Type your keyword in "A word or phrase in the file" and search in My Chat Logs. :)
RE: Pluslive - logging by DeatzoSeol on 06-26-2006 at 03:31 PM

So actually, there isn't a way of not to group conversations by date?:@:S:(+o((N)
Okay, can then anyone please please please write a script for it...

RE: Pluslive - logging by ~*McoreD*~ on 06-26-2006 at 03:53 PM

DeatzoSeol, bottom left listBox, titled "Current Log's Sessions" is for that I guess.

RE: Pluslive - logging by DeatzoSeol on 06-26-2006 at 04:09 PM

Ok thx:), but I don't have the XHTML-log, I use plain-text... and even plain text is archived by date (which is very unuseful for me)... :-(

RE: Pluslive - logging by qgroessl on 06-26-2006 at 04:11 PM

There is an option to sort by email... go to Plus!-Preferences-Conversations-Chat Logging---- Look for the "save by date" and the "save by email"... check which one you'd like.

RE: Pluslive - logging by DeatzoSeol on 06-26-2006 at 04:22 PM

Okay I know:), I had already enabled that, but it still archives all by date:^)
It makes a new map 'someguy@hotmail.com' and places a .txt file named 'june 2006.txt' in it (or whatever the month is). I simply want the .txt-file to be 'someguy@hotmail.com.txt' in my 'Chat History' map (which I created myself)...
And, again, is there a possibility to create both XHTML and plain-text?... (It's just I love a portable .txt file for when I chat on my other computer it's easily merged, and the XHTML-file is easy because all drawings and custom emoticons are showed;):P...)

RE: Pluslive - logging by Ohareo on 06-26-2006 at 05:43 PM

How are you supposed to open the .PLE files that are now saved as the HTML format?  What application will recognize them?

RE: Pluslive - logging by Auspex on 06-27-2006 at 01:56 AM

I also had the Rhalph's problem... I realised that what's causing plus! not to log the conversations is the Clean Messenger application. There's something that when removed using the Clean Messenger, disables Plus! from logging the conversations.

I tested removing only the main advertisement, and there was no problem. Plus! is logging the conversations normally.

RE: Pluslive - logging by lysp on 06-27-2006 at 05:53 AM

yes i know you can search through various log files, but log files are simply that. Log files.

I dont need my 400+ contacts over 3 different emails all sorted into nice directories, it just makes it alot harder for me.

While i can understand it might make it simpler for some people, there needs to be an option to turn it off.

I tried sorting by date but having 500 files named "June 2006.txt" doesnt help me at all.

It really needs to be back how it was.

email@address.com.txt with the option to archive in directories if people want to use that feature.

RE: Pluslive - logging by DeatzoSeol on 06-27-2006 at 01:52 PM

I agree with Lysp here. :-P

Actually there is nothing changed (much) in that aspect...

As UTI already said, if you choose to sort by date your logs will still be saved as "email@address.com.txt" and will still be archived by date.

However,

Disabling the archiving is not possible anymore. Logs will always be archived. The reason for that is probably that logs can become massive when you don't archive/split them and they will in notime render totally useless because of their size (it would slow down everything in Messenger). Though you can adjust the subdirectories to where the files are archived by altering a registry key.

(EDIT: you can even alter it in such a way that it looks like no archiving is done, for that you need to define that registry setting to empty single quotes; see next posts)

Yes, just as in Plus!3 choose to archive by email and your logs will be grouped by email instead of by date.

Then choose to archive by date.

(PS: make up your mind what you want though :p)

Requested before and no, not possible for now.

This is off topic to the thread's subject. Please don't go off topic.

Anyways, PLE files are encrypted chat logs (they can both be text as XHTML of course). You need to open them with Messenger Plus!.

Normally when you install Plus! PLE files should automatically be associated with Plus! and thus you can simply double click on them to open them (you also need to correct password of course).
RE: Pluslive - logging by Patchou on 07-29-2006 at 09:46 PM

Archiving cannot be disabled right now in Plus! Live, however, you can modify the way it works to group your logs differently.

Registry settings are not documented yet but here is one that will help you: add a string value in the registry at "HKCU\Software\Patchou\Messenger Plus! Live\you@email.com\Preferences" called "LogsDateDirFormat". The default for this value is "MMMM yyyy" which means that files or directories (depending on your log settings) will display the month and the year. What you could do for example is set it to "yyyy" so that a new file will only be created once a year. You can also include text between single quotes to be displayed as is, like "'chat log' yyyy".

Hope it helps.

RE: Pluslive - logging by ~*McoreD*~ on 07-30-2006 at 12:07 AM

Hi Patchou, while we are at Registry, is there a hidden way to change the folder name created by Plus! Live for a new month. Currently it creates 2006 July but I would like it to be 2006-07. Thanks!

yes, that is exactly what Patchou just said ;) By the use of that registry key you can change the name to your likings... 2006-07 is produced by defining yyyy'-'MM.

HKCU\Software\Patchou\Messenger Plus! Live\you@email.com\Preferences\LogsDateDirFormat

Although not yet documented, the format is similar to how the ArchiveFileDateFmt registry key behaved in Plus!3. So you might wanna base your format on the documentation for Plus!3 for now: http://old.msgplus.net/help_registry.php#datetags

quote:
Date Tags
To add normal text, use single quotes. Example: "dd'/'MM" will produce "18/10".
    * d - Day of month as digits with no leading zero for single-digit days.
    * dd - Day of month as digits with leading zero for single-digit days.
    * ddd - Day of week as a three-letter abbreviation.
    * dddd - Day of week as its full name.
    * M - Month as digits with no leading zero for single-digit months.
    * MM - Month as digits with leading zero for single-digit months.
    * MMM - Month as a three-letter abbreviation.
    * MMMM - Month as its full name.
    * yy - Year as last two digits, but with leading zero for years less than 10.
    * yyyy - Year represented by full four digits.
such tags are used in Windows and in many programs btw, so they are kind of 'universal'.

PS:  This indeed also suggests you do not need to specify a date per-say; you can just use a text between single quotes to archive everything into a single subdirectory.

EDIT: Or you can even use a dot between single quotes to not archive at all (everything will be put into the main log dir):   '.'
(<= never thought of that before actually until now, stupid me)
But be very advised that logs can become extremely big, the bigger they are the slower everything will get!

;)
RE: Pluslive - logging by ~*McoreD*~ on 07-30-2006 at 06:10 AM

That's pretty neat. Thanks CookieRevised. :)

RE: Pluslive - logging by Dimebag on 07-30-2006 at 08:00 AM

Ok, I might be stupid, but is it somehow possible to split the event-logging into those sub-dirs too???
Meaning, I have my conversations logged in directories grouped by email... I'd like to have the eventlogs in there too...
Is it possible???

You can't split it into the same subdirs when you group your chat logs by email. Where need it to be saved in that case? in the subdir of contact x, in the subdir of contact y, or in the subdir of contact z? etc. There would be no possible logic into knowing where to save/split it to.

However, when you group your chat logs by date, the event log can indeed be split into the subdirs and each time a new date subdir is created a new event log will be created too:

Plus! > Preferences > Messenger > Event Logging > By date, in the chat log's current directory

Yeah, but I wanted to have an eventlog per contact, instead of just a huge pile of stuff... :-(
...alternatively, a way to filter by contact in the log viewer??
RE: Pluslive - logging by LeGaS on 08-03-2006 at 12:27 PM

Hello everybody! :)
I cannot find a better place to it, so I ask here.

So, since yesterday I've started logging my conversations and when I view one of them, because the font size is very little, so it's inpossible to read it through.

Is there a solution for this?
