Since you can't immediately login, remember that you can try logging into the Web Messenger,
at least until you can restore your normal Messenger functionality:
http://webmessenger.msn.com

However, here are some suggestions you should check/try if you haven't already.

1. If you haven't done so already, upgrade to the latest version of MSN Messenger:
http://g.msn.com/7MEEN_US/EN_0322/IN...SSENGER_DL.EXE
2. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
3. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).
4. Change your password @ https://login.passport.com/ChangePW.srf to
something smaller (under 10-12 characters), then try signing in again.
5. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall
if this is the case.
6. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
7. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
8. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
9. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
and do the same for the following:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

I steal a lot of thingies from you TReKiE :P.

There has got to be a way to get onto MSN. I have faced this problem last week and was able to fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling. Now even that doesn't work and I am seriously
p!$$ed off. I have kept my patience with this and now I'm just ready to slam in my monitor.

RE: error code: 81000314 by Xx.Princess.xX on 07-03-2006 at 03:20 AM

I have the EXACT same problem.. I've done EVERYTHING and now I'm about to shoot the computer. Msn isn't down and is stable.. My brother has no problems on his so i tried on his computer with my account and it came up with the same error. Is there something wrong with my accout? I can use Hotmail directly and it is fine, whereas MSN Web Messenger doesn't even work and comes up with the same error code. HELP! =[ I'm so annoyed

RE: error code: 81000314 by RebelSean on 07-03-2006 at 03:29 AM

This is because of the .NET service being screwed up, it's a holiday weekend so it might take some time for it to be fixed.

Be patient :).

RE: error code: 81000314 by mullog on 07-03-2006 at 07:41 AM

Had a similiar thing happen - locked out of one account on one computer where other accounts worked but that locked account worked on another computer, so it didn't seem like a server problem.

After two days, I thought about the error code led to this in the help file:

----
Error 81000314, 81000377 or 81000378: Your contact list is not available
If you receive one of these messages, your contact list is not
available or is in read-only mode. Wait a few minutes, and then try to
sign in again.
----

So what worked for me is I went to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Contacts\<account> and renamed the contactcoll.cache to contactcoll.cache.bak.

Hope that works for someone else.
