ive installed linux on vmware a few times with no problems, not sure about virtual pc but it also should run linux fine :/

VMWare's player has actually been free for a while, you just needed to find the blank OS image to get it up and running.

To be honest with ya, when VPC was owned by Connectix it was alright, and it supported Linux. When MS bought it, all Linux support vanished (although I had it running on it a few times, it was better than VMWare in some respects). So, VMWare > VPC.

I've been playing with Virtual Server 2005 that I got from a Microsoft Event, and I have to say -- it's _very_ cool. It integrates very well with windows and IIS, and its quite stable and fast. I have yet to try Virtual PC, though.
