Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-17-2006 at 10:12 PM

Ok i've had it with my connection keep dropping out in a weird way and wondered if you guys can help.

I live in chelmsford, essex in the UK and have an AOL 1Mb connection using the BT Voyager 100 ADSL USB Modem

My problem is that after a while (especially in the last 2 weeks but has happened alot before) pages will not load up and i do not have any in or out going data (i get this information by lookign at uTorrent (h))

[DAMNIT it just done it again :@] However the DSL monitor shows two green arrows (indicating a live good connection)

To 'fix' my connection i have to tell the AOL dialler (some other crappy bloated peice of shit, found here "C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe" if you wanted to know) to disconnect after its finished thinking about disconnecting thought about spam and then remembered that i told it to disconnect it disconnects, i then have to tell it to connect again going through the same shit.

I thought that it possibly could have been my phone line socket as my dad doesn't seem to experience the same troubles (on a different computer in a different room) but i have no idea how to 'test it' as such.

This is driving me mental, We're planning on switching over to talk talk broadband and buying a Belkin wireless modem so as to network the PC's Laptops (and my psp:P) would this fix this issue?

Any ideas as to a fix would be great.

thanks

Does it drop at any random times?
Cos we have ad the same problem. The BT man came round and put the line into another box. And now it has worked fine :D
Hope this helps,
Nathan

its just DSL as far as i know and yes pretty random

by the way what do you mean other box :S

RE: Connection Drops need help by Nathan on 08-17-2006 at 10:25 PM

Like another phone connection port. Where all your other phones connect.

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-17-2006 at 10:28 PM

thing is it does connect to the interenet, as you can see i'm posting this now

however i'd think that they'd come over fiddle with the wires whatever and then ask me to test i'd connect woo diddy woo he's leave and then I'd get cut off again ¬_¬

MY dad doesn't spend very long on the internet so i couldn't really tell you if the problem affects his pc also

unfortunatley he like most people automatically assumes its a problem with my computer and acuses me of doing too much on it at once and fucking ti about 8-) he knows nothing about tech, earlier i had to show him how to delete an email 8-)

RE: Connection Drops need help by Nathan on 08-17-2006 at 10:29 PM

:/ :P
Well it let me connect as well afterwards. So I still think its worth a try ;)

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-17-2006 at 10:42 PM

Dad just said that he could ask one of his work team to test the signal strength between all the connections when they have some time spare :-/

Haha, My dads like that, he thinks having a 15" monitor slows his pc down ^o)

have you checked that al the filters on the phones in your house are plugged in??
RE: Connection Drops need help by Nathan on 08-17-2006 at 11:23 PM

And try swapping a filter you know works with the one thats dodgy (the one your getting interent off).
My mums like that too :(
She reckons she knows so much but she doesnt and she blames me for anything that goes wrong :P

RE: Connection Drops need help by Ezra on 08-17-2006 at 11:32 PM

Does it happen when using uTorrent?

Cause that's what usually causes this, uTorrent (All Torrent Clients) opens a lot of connections (100+) and that causes connection drops. Set uTorrent to use 100 or less connections max and see if it still happens.

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-17-2006 at 11:38 PM

ok done what you said, i've had utorrent closed for a while (didn't realise) and not expereinced any of these drops. hopefully we've hit the nail on the head.

However I think that i've also had them whilst utorrent has been closed so possibly not :(

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-20-2006 at 10:55 AM

nope still getting these drops whilst no utorrent running ¬_¬

RE: Connection Drops need help by Kenji on 08-20-2006 at 11:20 AM

did you try swapping the filters around?

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-20-2006 at 10:23 PM

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-21-2006 at 05:39 PM

wow AOL REALLY don't want to lose you do they :P

20 minutes on hold to then get put on hold for another 20 minutes while being transferred to a different customer services dept

then the conversation went roughly as follows:

AOL guy- Hello sir how can i improve your aol online experience today :cheesy:
Me - Hello i'd like my MAC code so that i can change ISP's please
AOL guy - BUT sir, why would you want to change ISP's?
Me - Well for a start i keep getting disconnected even after all your so called help team helped me, Your company has slipped up one too many times in the past and recently just released a rather large list of searches from various AOL users which is a major breach of privacy and most importantly I've had a better offer from Talk Talk
Aol Guy - OH....B-B-BUT DID YOU KNOW that the talk talk package comes with a download limit! *he feels smug*
Me - Yes i did and There is no way i download 40GB in a month
AOL guy - The talk talk offer also has a fair usage limit so you can't download files! What do you use the internet for?
Me - I know of the fair usage policy and you can download and play games and surf the internet and do various other things just as well as i can on aol so can i please just have my mac code thank you
AOL Guy - Hmm that talk talk package is £20 i can offer you the same package through AOL for £12.99 *is lieing, AOL do not offer this at all and why would they charge £10 less for a better broadband package + Telephone + Line Rental*
Me - No i just want the MAC code please! thankyou
AOL Guy - ok so you want to cancel with AOL?
Me - Yes
AOL Guy - How has your experience been with aol and why are you choosing to move ISP?
Me - Poor and i've already told you this, may i please just have my MAC code?
AOL Guy - ok hold on
Me - *holds for 10 minutes*
AOL Guy - hello would you like us to forward all your emails to your new ISP?
Me - is there a charge?
Aol guy - yes 2.99 a month
Me - *checks with dad* ok yes we will have that service for 6 months only
AOL guy - ok please hold *probably has a wank here*
Me - *Gets tired of listening to the same hold music*
AOL guy - yes hello? that is now set up you will receive this service on your next bill
Me - ok thankyou
AOL guy - is there anything else i can help you with today?
Me - uhhhh the MAC code can i please have it?
AOL guy - yes hold on..... *cleans up after his wank*
Me - *really agrevated now*
AOL Guy - Hello? yeah i've sent an email to the main account holder you should receive it in 48 hours
Me - Can you forward the email to my other email please?
AOL Guy - certainly please hold
Me - :dodgy:
AOL Guy - hello yes which email would you like to forward it to?
Me - anileator@gmail.com A-N-I-L-E-A-T-O-R-AT-G-M-A-I-L-DOT-COM
AOL Guy - ok please hold
Me - :@
Aol guy - ok i have sent the email to that email also, is there anything else i can help you with today?
Me - No
Aol guy - Ok thankyou goodbye have a nice day
Me - yes bye.

RE: Connection Drops need help by aNILEator on 08-27-2006 at 09:24 AM

BUMP:

*sigh* well BT haven't come to fix the connection yet, (our phones have been out so very poor internet) the phones appear to have fixd themselves and now the internet drops are back :( at least whent he phones were dead too it would disconnect properly now it just does this no noification conenction drop thing again :(

BT man just arrived and fixed the phones, we had a phone line that wasn't connected to anything and had become corrupt basically and was feeding back into the main point, he simply cut that cable out so it isn't inputting anymore.

Internet should work now as he explained that broadband hates the slightest bit of noise on the line, wheras phones are more tolerant and this has probably been building up for weeks so here's hoping (yn)
