Getting a new box by crank on 09-09-2006 at 07:21 AM

Windows® XP Pro Edition
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+
2048MB (2x1GB) RAM
320GB sATA
DVD/CD-RW Multi DL
DVD16x
nVidia GeForce 7950 GX2

That's what i atleast want, but depending on the price i'm gonna go for a diffirent GPU from the nVidea GeForce 7 series. Altho i should ba able to get it, as i have €1700 for it (and €350 extra for my monitor but i can always cut a bit if i need some more for the rest).

Basicly what i want to do is get a gaming pc, possible to run vista later (these specs kinda asure that :p). But i'm gonna put atleast one linux distro on it too.

Anyone got some tips on parts i should get combined with these (or instead), keep in mind that i hate Intel and dislike ATI :p

Geta a SATA 2 compatible Hard Drive rather than just SATA, it has a faster transfer speed.

Also, save up for the X2 4800+.

Well, i'm gonna see what i can get for my money, i need to know how much the price for it will be and maybe change some parts once i know it.

Get a Intel Core Duo processor, they are kinda expensive but they are the best desktop processors you can buy now...

The E6600 'Conroe' is about €130 more than that AMD X2 4200+ and about the same price as a AMD X2 4800+

About the gpu I like ATi better, but that's just my opinion :-D

Heh, thats where my opinion changes. Any pc i would build would use an Nvidia GPU, but thats just me. I've heard ATI cards are better when you want to use tv out options.

Whaaaaaaaa?  How much is that?
RE: Getting a new box by crank on 09-09-2006 at 03:47 PM

€1811 (€1961 with XP Pro) if i counted right, so i might get a second 19" LCD (hell, maybe a widescreen 20"), or another pair of HD's, or a second DVD-RW. Altho a new cellphone could be usefull

Well i can't blame you for not knowing but:
Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (5.1 - 2600)]
Mem: [Usage: 219/256MB (85.55%)]
HD: [Total/Free: 34.23/1.37GB]
CPU: [1 CPU - AMD Athlon Processor, 1.05 GHz, L1: 64KB L2: 256KB (83% Load)]
VidCard: [nVidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400]
Moni: [Some Piece Of Crap-monitor] (=> some 17" old thing)

There's not much useable in there no?

Edit: Typo
RE: Getting a new box by Ezra on 09-09-2006 at 04:09 PM

I still think you should get an Intel Core 2 Duo :P, like I said it's about the same price as the 5000+ but is a lot better.

On the other hand I also read that motherboards for the conroe are more expensive than AM2 motherboards, but that was some time ago, don't know how it is today.

Found this interesting chart tho.

EDIT: I also think it might be better to take 4x 512 to get to 2 GB memory, use that with Dual Channel and you'll get better speeds than 2 x 1 GB and it might be even cheeper.

Intel is not what i want, it's just... ucky. For some reason i dislike it, and there is the price diffirence (small, but it is there). And no, atleast over here, a 4x 512 is more expensive then a 2x 1024 and the diffirence in performance couldn't be tht big.

Edit: Looks like this is turning into a AMD vs. Intel/nVidea vs. ATi discussion :p

I have that one too, it's great :-D

A bit expensive too, but worth it nonetheless.

Well, sure if that's what you want i'm not stopping you :P, You asked for opinions. ;) Nevertheless the 5000+ is also a very good processor.

I looked up some prices and indeed 2 1GB is about €20 cheaper than 4x 512 MB.

4 x 512 MB of RAM will perform much better than 2 x 1024 MB (Y).

PS an Nvidia card is definately better if you want TV out options.

Yes, but i actually can't afford €20 more :p unless if i wait a month, and  by then i'd have to change even more.

Indeed, and since i've got a tv in my room and soon we will get digital tv using our phone line (which means no more cable in my room cuz that would be paying twice) i'd like to be able to still use my tv without cable so the tv out will most likely be used a lot.

RE: Getting a new box by Nathan on 09-10-2006 at 10:27 AM

Persoanaly, I think ATI is better for tv output + the software supports it, and lets you do it in ease.

Get a DVD-ROM aswell if I were you! The GPU is good, I have that... Getting another at christmas!

Get a gigabyte mobo, they're nice and most of them have a wifi slot on it already.

Get a 17" screen, they're cheaper and can run 1280x1024 anyway.
