Hi i have a computer upstairs but it keeps on coming up with this

so what can i do to fix this

When it's starting up, tap F12 so that you go into the bios, then change the boot-order so the cd-rom drive goes first. Then put in your windows xp disk, then it should boot up, set it up to repair mode, and then when the dos screen comes up where you have to type something in, type in "fixboot" and what that fixes is pretty self explanatory.

Maybe you should contact Dell about that disk as you may need it in the future aswell.

Yep, you should get a recovery disk with your computer, you should at least get a piece of software that can create this disk for you. If not, then Dell's support sucks ass.

Cause:     Bios tend to remember what devices was once installed and will give an error when the removable hard drive is missing during bootup.

I found a simple solution today (Sept.5, 2002). I downloaded from bootdisk.com a software called XP Boot. It has a newer version of fdisk on it. After getting the error message, I ran fdisk /mbr and killed the master boot record. I then restarted the machine and it booted right up. Hope this works.
