will it make people use OpenSuse? Fedora? other free ones , Ubuntu have every right to do what there doing but i can see a downslide in there usage of Ubuntu

I don't think it will, if someone really wants to use Ubuntu, they will either download it, or pay to get it shipped.   I wouldn't mind betting the vast majority of the CDs sent out were wasted, just people wanting to get them becuase they were free to throw them around or whatever, which obviously costs money.

thats what i'd do if i couldnt get it myself, , ii think this move is a good one for the company/distro to survive in the long run,

I ordered a few, only because I need 32 bit and 64 bit, and it came with mac ones (which I didn't even need). I haven't installed it yet, but I will. Tbh, it costs them like 5 pounds everytime they send some disks.  If people like Sam wouldn't have abused the system, this wouldn't happen and the service would still have some use.

True. But this is only to stop abusers like sonicsam and traxor (:refuck:) from ordering a few thousand cds :dodgy:
People with fast internet connections can download the new versions but its people like me who have uber sucky connections that will suffer.
Abusers suck.

i know what you mean, Even though i have the fastest ADSL  in Aussie 1500/256 its still not fast enough IMO , i dont think it'll be so bad, just pre order a copy or something

I order like 20 discs (thats what i did for the last version) cause i have friends at uni and friends who live near me. Instead of all of us ordering one-two, i order for all of us. Now its going to be more difficult for me to download 600 some MB at 8kbps (basically it takes a bit over a day approx) and then to write a copy and circulate it between all of them.
Too much of a pain tbh :sad:

I got 5 Ubuntu discs a while ago to test it out and share it (like it said to :p). I ran it off the CD as I didn't wanna install it reinstall windows to make it a dual boot machine. The startup time is the longest of any distro I've ever used! Now I know that it's slower running from a CD, but I used Knoppix in exactly the same way and with much better results.

I don't see people paying for discs when other distros are still available for free, especially seeing as Ubuntu doesn't seem to be as popular as others right now *-)

Knoppix was designed as a LiveCD, its optimized as a LiveCD

The reason Ubuntu is going to start charging is, as said earlier in this thread, people order CDs and waste them. Many people I know used it once. Many PC users stick to what they know and seeing as PCs mainly get shipped with Windows or people buy Macs, Linux distros often go unheard of and are treated as "different". It's becoming more apparrant that Linux is slowly starting to look more and more like Windows using a "taskbar-esque" bar at the bottom, a "K" menu rather than a start menu. While Linux is coming up with with new features, MS are taking note of the good ones and putting them into Windows (things such as the multiple desktops PowerToy that is available).  No matter how much any OS improves, Windows is always going to win, meaning no OS is giong to be completly free AND compete seriously against MS :p

Thousands is a bit much, but people who order a few hundred disks don't really make a difference; CDs are cheap, postage is expensive. It's be just because the sponsor doesn't want to pay for it, I don't know how much good it was doing them, but I'd never heaerd of Canonical before, and never dealth with them since, so their sponsorship was useless on me. Also, nobody made them ship lots of CDs, they could have just rejected large orders.

Great Idea under, Just 1 problem Telstra didn't Roll out Cable where i am In Melbourne , im in the South eastern suburbs of Melbourne, i think they stopped it at Upwey which is about 25min from me roughly, many ADSL providers that have connectioons out near me ( im on the Emerald Exchange ) only have ADSL1 atm,, Belgrave has ADSL2 enabled which is just the next suburb but to far to be my local exchange which sucks otherwise i woulda had ADSL2 by now,
