Will Linux work on a Mac? by Woraug on 10-06-2006 at 06:25 AM

I've never used a Mac, or Linux, but I want to learn.  I'm buying a Mac laptop from the high school here for $100 (A bit much, but it goes to helping pay for new computers for the tech class).  All I really know about it (since I've never used a Mac) is that it's currently running OS 9.1

I want to know if I can put Linux Ubuntu on it, and dual boot it and OS X.

Whatever. Idiot. Take your bullshit lies/rubbish elsewhere.

If you don't have anything worthy to say DON'T SAY IT AT ALL.

Okay, because it is running OS 9.1 then it'll be a PowerPC based processor.

First of all, because it is running an older version of Mac OS (before Mac OS X was introduced - v10) you'll want to check if it is actually capable (specifications) of running OS X. You'll need a G3 processor at least.

Full requirements can be found at: http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html

Now - in regards to Linux you can't use standard x86 builds because they're for Intel processors. You need the ppc builds which are for PowerPC processors.

Luckily Ubuntu Linux has these: http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu//6.06/

What you're looking for is "Mac (PowerPC) desktop CD" and once again it requires a G3 or greater processor.

Hope this helps.

Uh what do you think OS X does run on then? :S

If its currently using Mac OS 9.1, it's unlikely it will able to run OS X.  But you will be able to run PowerPC Linux on, eg PenguinPPC

I was finally able to pick up the laptop.  Here's the specs on it:

Proc: PowerPC G3
Machine speed: 300mhz
Disk cache: 512k
RAM: 160mb
Video RAM: 4mb

Question 1: Can this handle OS X very good.  If not, what's the highest I should upgrade to?

Question 2: Before I take this apart, can the RAM be upgraded?

Question 3: Does it use a regular slim CD drive as a normal laptop?  It seems the one in it is busted.

Question 4: And finally, it uses a standard 2.5", correct?  The one in it is only 5gb, and that just won't do.

Ah, it's a good thing that money is going to a good cause, since that machine seems a bit on the shoddy side.

According to the OSX recommendations that Chris posted, no, it won't run OSX properly with that amount of ram. You'd probably be able to get Ubuntu working with some satisfaction if you remember the fact that your not using top-notch hardware.

Check under the battery and any other easily accessed panels on the bottom of the laptop. Most likely, one will have access to ram and one will have access to the HDD. Unless apple didn't anticipate user upgrades.

In terms of the optical drive, I have a feeling its a proprietary drive, maybe if you post a picture someone would be able to tell you. (weren't g3 iBooks the colored apple shaped ones?)

mmm.. Juicy flame bait. Seriously, that was a stupid thing to say, just because you don't like mac's that doesn't mean they don't have a decent product.

osx not working properly on a mac isn't an opinion, its a sarcastic, blatantly false fact.

So what are you supposed to run OS X on? In "your opinion"...
