Can't connect to websites by Chris4 on 12-23-2006 at 09:23 PM

I went round my friends house to fix up her computer. I got rid of about 70% of start-up programs and it ran like a bullet.

The problem is though, I went to Windows Update and there was 1 update, Internet Explorer 7. So I downloaded it, installed it and restarted the computer. Then I found I couldn't go on any websites. However, Windows Live Messenger works and the actual broadband connection seems to be fine. I just can't connect on Internet Explorer. Dazzy sent me Firefox on WLM, but I installed that and that didn't work either. :undecided:

I'm going back round tomorrow, so any ideas how I could possibly fix it?
I'm talking to her on WLM now, so if you have any questions, I can ask her.

Thanks.

Try and check if something is screwing around with the ports and blocking/changing data.

Ahh.. I think they have that. That may just be the problem.
I'll try and do that tomorrow, but if anyone else has and suggestions, that would be appreciated.

Maybe some firewall is blocking IE7  from connecting to internet

RE: Can't connect to websites by Chris4 on 12-23-2006 at 10:41 PM

I did add 'Internet Explorer' to the Windows Firewall exception list, but didn't do anything.

What's the error you get with IE and FF?

RE: Can't connect to websites by NiteMare on 12-23-2006 at 10:49 PM

try the reset button on the bottom of the internet options>>advanced window

Well, seeing that FF or IE will not work, it must be something else.

Unless IE amazingly controls Firefox.

Or we could just wait until we have enough information to actually figure out what's wrong instead of posting shit.

try in safe mode and with no security suite to see if some software is blocking it...

Just a question: when you installed Firefox, did you import settings from Internet Explorer?

RE: Can't connect to websites by andrewdodd13 on 12-23-2006 at 11:13 PM

My money is on it being Norton. Restarting in safe mode is unlikely to work as networking drivers will be unavailable.

Try uninstalling Norton if the patch doesn't work. If it doesn't help, reinstall Norton.

Edit: Further to the above, try entering a link such as http://64.233.183.103/. This should give you Google. If it does, then you know DNS is the problem.

That of course depends if said friend is using a router or not. If they're using a USB/PCI ADSL modem then they're stuff - networking means Ethernet only. Of course, if they are using Ethernet and a router, that adds a whole other factor to the problem. :)

No. I didn't because I just wanted to test the basic default Firefox; which I guess was the right thing to do, seeing as I wanted it nothing to do with IE, as that doesn't work. :)

They are using a broadband modem, connected by ethernet. 8-)

There isn't a router, I don't think, but I tried disconnecting the modem already. The internet connection is fine.

Networking will work in this case. Most USB ADSL modems supplied by ISPs these days don't work under Safe Mode because they also require USB drivers to be loaded.

Ok, well I tried the patch, didn't work.
So I uninstalled Norton and then it worked :)
I don't that over WLM, didn't bother going round there.
