Could somone explain something about cpus? by Supersonicdarky on 01-02-2007 at 06:06 PM

what are the advantages of dual core cpus? what runs faster/better with them?

i do alot of video converting and 3d rendering. would it be noticeably faster than with a single core? (ex 2.2 ghz vs 2core 2.2 ghz cpu)

its just that i was thinking of getting this...

Dual Core processors allows your computer to handle two threads at once instead of one. A thread is a stream of data from a program; programs may have just one thread or several, depending on the application.

The advantage of a dual core for the average user is added multi-tasking capabilities. For example, since buying my dual core processor, I can leave everything open whilst running a game; this is because one core is handling the game whilst the other is handling anything else that happens.

Some applications now support multi-threading, which means they can send more than one thread of data at once to the processor; with programs like this you will notice a difference with a dual-core since more will be done at once. Most applications however do not have multi-core support and will therefore only send one thread at once; meaning that one will not notice a performance difference with this program. However it will probably run faster because whilst one core is handling the thread from that application, the other core will handle anything else running, therefore spreading the load of information to be processed.

In conclusion, it'll be quicker for you if:

  • The applications you're using support multi-threading
  • You are running lots of stuff (such as WLM and some web-pages) at the same time as your demanding applications (like your video converter or your 3d renderer).

I hope this will be helpful to you, this is possibly my longest post ^_^
Happy 1800 Posts btw =]

according to this vue 5  uses multithreading and amd athlon 64 x2 is recomended for it cuz it will split the load onto both cores. so it will be double the speed of a single core cpu of the same frequency?

and having 2 cores is the same as having 2 cpus?

i just want to get the concept right ;>

and yes, go me for 1800 +1 posts =]

As far as I know, dual-core is the same as having two CPUs.
(Somebody correct me if I'm wrong!)

The difference in technology is that you only have one CPU chip, therefore you don't need to buy a 2 CPU motherboard (which are normally only for servers [and are very expensive compared to single CPU motherboard with the same functionality]). The other difference is of course that with two CPUs you can have a higher frequency (since the core is physically double the size and they have produced better CPUs).

Either way you'll see an increase in speed full stop.

Buying that you'll get more than speed difference.

if your using 2.2GHz proccessor. Im guessing this next bit btw.

Your not using a Sata drive.
your not using DDR2 Memory.

So you add your sata drive generally gives you slight preformance boost.
DDR2 Memory again given you preformance boost, for multi tasking.

You can have best processor in the world but with out the memory to match your automatically hitting a bottleneck :-)

In my Eyes you'll get nice buy for that. an a noticable preformance boost.

nopes, i think not.
if iirc it separates arithmetic operations in one core, so it works faster...

Core 2 Duo would give better performance overall.

To add to kao's post, Core 2 Duo would be better than getting an AMD Athlon X2 since the technology is newer. And having using an AMD and an Intel at the same frequency I have to say I noticed a difference.

i hate intel so its not a choice for me [Image: msn_wink.gif]

btw, its 2ghz, not 2.2. I just used 2.2 as an example

If you weren't a fan boy, you would get a Core 2 Duo and get best performance and best bang for the buck..
But yeah, remain a fanboy and waste money!

No offense, but that's the most stupid thing I've heard this year.

I hope your over-spending and lack of performance helps you state your undying love for AMD.

RE: Could somone explain something about cpus? by Supersonicdarky on 01-02-2007 at 08:28 PM

not really overspending cuz i get a $150 card for free if i buy the pc

i have my reasons so shush...

RE: Could somone explain something about cpus? by Dr4g0n on 01-02-2007 at 08:58 PM

Fair enough on the free card thing, that almost makes it worth it.

Could you explain why you hate Intel?

You shouldn't.
That's what I thought for Intel too, until I saw reviews and comparison charts for the Core 2 Duo processors, and I changed my mind about Intel.
Core 2 Duos are faster, use less energy, and produce less heat so you should go for an Intel Core 2 Duo :P
RE: Could somone explain something about cpus? by Nathan on 01-02-2007 at 09:40 PM

lmao produce less heat :/
My laptop is 2.0ghz core 2 duo and its averages at 63'C+ so thats always not true :P

Laptops run hotter than desktops...

Core 2 Duo's also overclock a hell of a lot better than X2's.
