Setting up speed for another computer in network? by L. Coyote on 01-25-2007 at 06:38 PM

Hey, my mother is driving me nuts since she's discovered the "wonders" of speaking through a microphone to random people across the world...

Since we share a connection, it's not letting me work without having to wait a century for things to load.

So, I was wondering if there's a way to set a speed limit for her computer.

Please don't suggest:
* Taking the microphone away. I'm not against her stupid chats.
* Scaring her with stupid DOS programs. She's only going to bug me more.

Give yourself more bandwith than her , then yours will be faster. :p

Buy a new router that lets you set bandwidth limits for each IP? :P

Or are you looking for a program you can install on her PC?

A router costs money. :P

Though I hadn't thought of installing a program on her computer. :P Are there any programs like that, anyway?

I can only find programs that "raise" your speed ().

Well, I thought there were, but now I can't find anything good... :dodgy:

Here's some shareware...

http://www.netlimiter.com/
http://www.softperfect.com/products/bandwidth/

I also read about a free program called "Shunra Nimbus" but there doesn't seem to be an official webpage for it... :dodgy:

first google search i did gave http://www.netlimiter.com/

I have no idea if it's good or not, but it looks like it might do what you want.

DU Super Controler does the job very well... but I can't find the free version I used to have...

Limiting bandwidth isn't going to work -- at least not for her, if the culprit is voice conversations.  If there isn't enough bandwidth, her conversations will no longer work and I imagine she will complain.

What software does she use for that?  Typically, voice doesn't require much bandwidth, which makes me wonder if that is even the problem...  How fast is the shared connection?

(Y)

I'm downloading them, and going to be trying them.

Thanks to the three of you. I'll update this post with the outcome (if no one else posts after me :P).

Voice call quality can adapt to available bandwidth. So, if you have a 100000/100000 kbps connection, the voice might use 200/200 kbps, but if you only have a 100/100 kbps connection, then the voice will make do using 90/90 kbps only.

Also, things taking a century to load might be caused not by having no download bandwidth left, but only no upload bandwith left, and just freeing up a small amount is all that is needed.

Sorry, I didn't see your post before. :-/

She's using WLM. The connection is being shared via a LAN, so she gets all the data very quickly.

It actually seems to have worked, or maybe it didn't and I didn't realize. She said she just listened to a song via a conversation and it was fine.

So I've told her to let me know when she starts another conversation again, so I can be prepared to see the difference.

For now, however, since I installed Netlimiter I haven't had a lag.

Yes, thus I limited both upload and download. I'm not sure if I've done it right, so I'll be making a few tests.

Thanks.
