Do nouns have sexes? by absorbation on 02-16-2007 at 02:27 PM

Now I have your attention using the word sex is the title I have some crazy stuff to blab about. When you think of certain nouns, well colours and the alphabet, do you associate them to have genders?

I think the colour yellow, and the letter B is a female. Also C is a bit camp, whereas A is very manly. Do you agree and what things to you associate to have sexes?

I've always thought this since I was young. However I believe purple to be a female, but others say it's male.

Sounds too much like French with the masculine and feminine, they're just words :undecided:.

No, I don't think that certain things are masculine or feminine.

That was probably the strangest thing I learned about the French language in school, and I still don't understand it very well.

Certain colours, words or images have connotations of one sex or another within one society, in another the might not... It's a common thought, when yo think of a little baby girls room you think pink obviously, baby boy = blue etc etc... Advertisers often use this to target a market as well, and designers when designing things for a target market. This can be seen as common sense, you wouldnt make a night light targeted for s young boy's room pink and fluffy =p

Blond and Blonde :)
(Male and Female)

Its like one of the only English words with masculine and feminine spellings

(although its a adjective and not a noun..)

Hmm, to me it sounds like absorbation is experiencing a form of synesthesia.

I don't associate genders with words and probably not even with colours, although I do see every letter and number as having its specific colour.

O common pink is the new white everyone knows that...

Hard question though... But what you think about the gender of nouns is probably related to your native language... and seeing Dutch has the most screwed up noungenderness (you know what I mean...) of any language I know... that is probably the reason why I think it is a hard question...
RE: Do nouns have sexes? by ayjay on 02-16-2007 at 07:31 PM

No, but I associate numbers/colours/letters with one another :P

Yeah, in French everything has sexes. They do in Spanish too (But not the same :dodgy:)

Anyways, I don't think they do in english :/

In Latin words have sexes and all languages based on it have sexes too.
German has sexes too.
Almost all languages I know execept English have words with different sexes.
French has only male and female.
Dutch has only neutral and not neutral(male+female)

I think it's common people have sexed words.
Some words just belong to men like war and strength like make-up and beauty to women. (no intention for sexismn on purpose)
However the words above aren't sexed to the right gender in some languages.

Latin
bellum = war
-um = neutral

It is...its just that we say masculine and feminine now...we used to say 'gender', which is a synonym for sex.

Is this like the modern Plus! trend?

He, him, his, actor, prince, king, etc. are all male.

She, her, actress, princess, queen, etc. are all female.

I like English better because it has no sexes. Learning a new language and learning sexes for everything could be kind of annoying, trust me. I went through that while learning french

I think you're talking rubbish.

It's weird though, because compared to learning French, English is amazingly difficult to learn, simply because we have so many different words (the language with the most words in the world in fact), even though we don't have feminine and masculine words etc.

weirdo. :P

Well, in my opinion it's way easier to learn english precisely because you dont make a difference between male and female. You dont really need to know all the words to understand the language, so it doesnt matters how many words there are :P

I find French a whole lot easier to learn because of the use of lots of patterns. My French teacher pointed out that  there are SIX different ways to pronounce -ough, and so many irregular verbs...to be, to meet, to have...

JUST SO FREAKING COMPLEX!

RE: Do nouns have sexes? by absorbation on 02-17-2007 at 02:17 PM

Back on topic. When you think of colours, do you believe them to have genders?

Black = Male
Yello = Female
Blue = Male

It's what I seem to think.

RE: Do nouns have sexes? by MeEtc on 02-17-2007 at 02:23 PM

no, colours have temperatures.
purple, blue green = cool colours
yellow, orange, red = warm colours

RE: Do nouns have sexes? by Matti on 02-17-2007 at 03:05 PM

Well, in fact French colours are all male...

quote:
[EN] Red is my favourite colour.
[FR] Le rouge est ma couleur favorite.
Aargh... weird... :S
