WLM and Vista (Home) Problem (81000378) by Dale on 03-26-2007 at 10:40 AM

I'm trying to sort out my mates computer with WLM on it and it's just not working. I try logging in and it gives her an error (below) but when I try the help document here:

... it works fine for the HTTP tests, also her firewall doesn't block it AND it allows me to log on via Web Messenger. This is pretty strange... anyone know how to solve this problem?

How long has this error been happening?

Error 81000314, 81000377 or 81000378: Your contact list is not available
If you receive one of these messages, your contact list is not available or is in read-only mode. The Windows Live Messenger service may be experiencing technical difficulties. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again.

It's been happening for over a week.

Hmm, that's a long time. Has it worked at all with this version before? I'm starting to think this is more of a cache problem...

Maybe clearing those will help (WLM will have to get the contactlist from servers again..i asume when logging into webmessenger all her contacts are there):
delete the two contact caches (folders) corresponding with her
passport in the following folders:
%userprofile%\contacts
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

It hasn't worked at all and I can't use an earlier version as it requires me to update. :/

Also Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts is unaccessible on here. It doesn't let me into the Local Settings folder. I f@#!*& hate Vista. :/

I'm sorry i can't help you much with Vista itself as i don't have Vista.
Maybe this site can help: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com

I think you should be looking into the direction of admin priviledges to access that folder. It does show hidden folders/files yea?

Right, I have removed them two folders after using [WINDOWS KEY] + R and then type it in.

Removed them two folders, exited WLM and started it back up and it still doesn't work. There are no network problems here.

Hmm.. for the time being i'll just have to stick with MSN 7.5 :/

RE: WLM and Vista (Home) Problem (81000378) by Sunshine on 03-26-2007 at 12:32 PM

Last resort: a completely new install (install through righclicking the file then choose "install as admin" on Vista to have full rights if i'm not mistaken), you might even have to do this to go back to 7.5...

Completely remove (MSN/Windows Live) Messenger

That's because on Vista it is not Local Settings\Application Data, but AppData\Local, so it would be something like:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\.

Has anyone got a fix for this error as I've had it for the past 2 days :(.

I've re-installed Vista, tried 7.0, 7.5, 8.1, 8.5 and 9.0 BETA :(

Any way to fix it?
