Office 2007 and 2003 Compatability by stoshrocket on 07-02-2007 at 08:12 PM
I was thinking of upgrading to Vista recently, the price has dropped somewhat and the hype about program compatibility has been pretty much swept over. However, I've heard something about the issue of compatibility between Office 2007 and 2003 documents. This thing is, I do a lot of my work at school, and then a lot at home: most of which I admit is on the computer. The computers at school are running Office 2003, and the problem is if I get office 2007 will I be prevented from transferring files back and forth in the manner I do now?
Any info much appreciated!

Nope, you can save in "compatibility mode" so that they remain compatible with Office 2003.

The XP Version!
Just so you know, you can also set your default to save in 97-2003 format.

If you ever need the other way around (two computers at home f.e. using different versions):
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint-please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.
By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in
these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see Knowledge Base article 924074.
Note: If you use Microsoft Word 2000 or Microsoft Word 2002 to read or write documents containing complex scripts, please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925451 for information to enable Word 2007 documents to be displayed correctly in your version of Word.

They're just filetypes.... You can set Windows not to show file extensions, you know.

That would be my suggestion for a little while until Office 2007 is dominant in the environments you work in. Office may nag you a bit about incompatible formatting in documents but it'll most likely save you some headaches when transferring documents.

New versions of Office tend to support all previous, Microsoft would be stupid to not take cases as often as yours into account. The problem is providing compatibility to those using older versions, and Sunshine has already pointed this out.
However that compatibility pack did not work for me, and I ended up having to use Office 2007 to view the newer files.
On the topic of choosing Vista editions I thought this may help :
