Windows XP Pro doesn't shut down. by roflmao456 on 07-14-2007 at 09:28 PM

K, my computer (this one) is being weird after the format ¬¬

i click: start > Turn off computer > CRASH (explorer.exe)

the only way i can choose the shutdown option is thru the windows task manager ~_~

but if i choose that, it does it perfectly until the "Windows is shutting down..." message and just hangs there until ... i manually turn it off :dodgy:

any fix for this?

I once heard of a similar problem that happens when you've used Windows to burn a disk during your windows session that can cause explorer.exe problems on shutdown.

It is possible that disabling the automatic end task logic might stop explorer.exe crashing on shutdown. If you click here you can download a registry fix that will stop the automatic end task logic on shutdown. As always, when messing with the registry, be careful to back it up just in case something goes wrong.

I heard that some viri can disable the shutdown options, but nothing about crashing explorer.exe.

McAfee VirusScan detects none.

I have this a lot when hibernating. It'll goto the blue screen and say "Preparing ot hibernate" and just stops.

Shutdown problems in Windows XP can be caused by many factors, just like earlier versions of Windows. These included: a damaged exit sound file; incorrectly configured, damaged, or incompatible hardware; conflicting programs, or an incompatible, damaged, or conflicting device driver.

Windows XP shutdown issues mostly center around a very few issues, especially legacy hardware and software compatibility issues.

Currently, the leading cause of Windows XP shutdown problems is hardware incompatibility, including driver issues. These are detailed below where known. However, it is impossible to list every possible hardware or driver issue individually. My best advice is: Check all drivers for all hardware devices to ensure that they are the current best for Windows XP.

SHUTDOWN HANGS ON “SAVING YOUR SETTINGS”
During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the “saving your settings” screen. During such a hang, there is no response to Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. The problem may be intermittent.

This is a known bug in Windows XP, for which Microsoft has a supported fix. To learn how to get this patch, see MSKB 307274, “Windows XP Stops Responding (Hangs) During Windows Shutdown.” The necessary patch is included in Windows XP Service Pack 1, and also is now available on the Windows Update site under “Recommended Updates” for Win XP Professional, titled “Restarting Windows XP.” However, to find it, you may need to reconfigure how Windows Update appears for you, by enabling the Windows Update Catalog as follows: At the Windows Update page, click Personalize Windows Update at the left, and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog. Save your settings. This adds the Windows Update Catalog link in the left box. Click this link, then click Find updates for Microsoft Windows systems. Pick Windows XP in the drop-down list, click Search, take Recommended Updates, and find the “Restarting Windows XP” patch which references Q307274.

As a workaround, newsgroup correspondent “lou” resolved this problem by dismantling the Windows XP logon Welcome screen. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts, then click “Change the way users log on or off.” Uncheck the box that says “Use the Welcome screen.” This removes the initial logon screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up the classic logon prompt that requires each user to type a user name and password.

eh? That's not off-topic at all...

If it _is_ a virus (which it probably isn't but meh) then in my opinion McAfee isn't likely to pick it up, seeing as it already hasn't when you scanned. Thus, certain other AV software may be able to detect the malware, but not McAfee.

My rant ends for today. (maybe not if someone like Voldemort flames me [note: this is not a generalisation.]) EDIT: Told you.

Haha. I love you too.

A question, when you try to turn it off, how long do you leave it on until it hangs? Have you tried leaving it on all night to see what happens? Have you tried closing absolutely everything, stop all useless processes, and turning it down? Logging off first and then turning off?
Just a few ideas. Also, you could try posting your hijack this log to see if we can spot anything suspicious... Of course, it could be that some random Windows file is corrupted...

Yes, I understood you. Also my answer, and proposed solution, could still work even if you hadn't burned any disk;

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\iavlsp.dll

Check your hard disc drive with Spybot S&D from Kolla.de or LSPFix from Cexx.org. This entry should not be fixed! Your best bet to repair it is to try the LSPFix from Cexx.org.

(you can see the results yourself using www.hijackthis.de)

RE: Windows XP Pro doesn't shut down. by roflmao456 on 07-16-2007 at 04:56 PM

i already did that from Cexx.org

but there's no problems :p

i'm not installing spybot :(

create a .bat file containing the word shutdown and try running it

RE: Windows XP Pro doesn't shut down. by MeEtc on 07-16-2007 at 10:03 PM

upload the .dll file to this site: http://www.virustotal.com/
it will be scanned there, and they will tell you if its a threat

Create a batch file with the following:

ECHO OFF

or if you want a gui
ECHO ON
shutdown -i
ECHO OFF
