Building a custom pc by Chris4 on 08-24-2007 at 02:25 AM
Anyone reccomend any websites where you can build yourself a custom pc (preferably in the UK)?
So far I know about:-
http://www.overclockers.co.uk - What I'm mainly looking at at the moment
http://www.cclonline.com - Individual parts
http://www.novatech.co.uk - Individual parts
http://www.dell.co.uk - Can change different parts a bit
Here's the specs (screenshot below) which I'm looking at (helped massively by Jhrono) but i need to get the price down a bit really. That price is without a monitor and case.
Think it's a good price for what I've got there? Anything there that I don't need or needs downgrading? Anything that's rubbish?
Thanks,
Chris

http://ebuyer.com <- Much cheaper than OCUK.
I personally wouldn't bother with the Sound Card either.

http://www.powerc.com/ - look at the motherboard bundles and the base units as well as complete systems as they offer more customisation

Ebuyer really has great prices..
Here's a way better config (I still hate the sound card lol)
For 742 £ you won't get a better config.. You really should save up some more and get this instead of making the computer worse by replacing good parts..

Hmm, ok. I don't even ve a job yet so It's kinda hard. Should do soon I guess.
Thanks for all suggestions I'll have a look at them all.
Any suggestions on a sound card then? I don't see why I need a better sound card, it's only for general use, nothing much. II'll probabely jut have some rubbish speakers, nothing fancy?

I notice that your original configuration includes a retail boxed CPU and a Zalman cooler. There's nothing wrong with that if you want the Zalman for the right reason, but in case you didn't know, Intel retail boxed CPUs come with an adequate cooler already.
You should only upgrade from the stock Intel cooler to Zalman if you are after lower noise levels. Zalman specializes in quiet cooling. However, if you want to build a silent PC, you should also choose an appropriate case and a silent power supply. If you are after better cooling, i.e. if you plan to overclock, then you will want to upgrade the stock Intel cooler, but with something else.
For a basic computer, not optimized for either silence or overclocking potential, just keep the stock cooler and save your money.

Hmm, well I've never overclocked before, I don't know anything about it. Is it worth buying the Zalman? Should I learn how to overclock? Should I look for better cooling?
RE: Building a custom pc by Jhrono on 08-25-2007 at 03:25 PM
As Adeptus said, you should only buy an after-market heatsink if you want a less noisier computer or if you want to overclock. Overclocking with that Zalman won't get you far but you'll juice some Mhz out of the Q6600, specially if it's from the G0 branch (less heat, hence more room for overclocking). However, for serious OC, you should get a Tuniq tower (or even a water cooling system, but that's off the budget)
Overclocking can be quite fun (and also risky sometimes if you do not know what you're doing) and it will surely bring you more performance. Nevertheless, it isn't an ultimate need to overclock but it surely is useful.
Honestly, Intel's stock heatsink sounds like a freaking airplane, imo, even if you don't intend to overclock, you should get either that Zalman or even a better one.

Unless they've changed a lot for the Core 2 processors, Intel's stock coolers are fairly quiet -- not exceptionally so like Zalman, but less noisy than majority of third party coolers.

Adeptus, you must have a different cooler from mine lol. I have an E6600 with a stock cooler and it's loooud

If you're willing to pay that for the case, swap it for a Lian-Li PC7 which is even cheaper! Here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?pro...01&catid=7&subcat=
Plus, it owns that one..
You should really try to get either a Q6600 (G0) or an E6850, not an E6750.
