I know in the previous beta (beta 1) it wouldn't let me add any contacts to my list has this been fixed?

There is not a major requirement or incinitive to update to 8.5, not much has changed, only some compatibility issues with Vista and some interoperability issues were fixed. It's your choice to upgrade, but yes it's worth it if you're using Vista.

I upgraded to 8.5 beta 2 and seems ok
