but then what would be the point of appearing offline? would you want your friends to know that your appearing offline?

I think he's looking for more ICQ-like handling off offline shortcuts. There should be a script that, if someone talks to you offline, will display them as an online contact with either an offline icon or "(Appear Offline)" next to their name.
