Local Administrator? by karkarlouise on 09-20-2007 at 07:18 AM

For a while I would get a message when I logged into MSN Messenger saying that if I wanted to update, I must log in as a local administrator. Now I can't even log in at all, because I get the message:

"You cannot sign into MSN Messenger because you are using an old version of MSN Messenger.

Note: To upgrade MSN Messenger, you need to log on to this computer as a local administrator."

What the heck does this mean, and how do I get MSN Messenger back??

You need to log in to the account with admin priviledges and upgrade there. The Windows account you are on does not have permission to install software. It would help if you told us wich Windows version you are using (XP, Vista).

You need to log on to Windows with the administrator's account in order to upgrade Messenger.

I've got Vista. I logged on as the only account on my laptop. I've never had my own computer before, and I'm totally oblivious to how they work.

right click the MSN Messenger icon, and hit "run as administrator".

I clicked on the link and typed in what it said, and it just gave me some more text:

"The syntax of this command is:

NET USER
[username [password : *] [options]] [DOMAIN/]
             username {password : *} /ADD [options] [/DOMAIN]
             username [/DELETE] [/DOMAIN]
             username [/TIMES:{times : ALL}]"

So what the heck does that mean? I still can't log into Messenger.

That might work, if that option were to pop up when I right-click the icon. Unfortunately, it doesn't, and I remain IM-less.
