There should be a feature where we can give that extra special someone a special noise when they come online; for when we're on a game or something, so we immediately know to alt+tab 
Or have I pwned myself? Can we already do it?

plus! > preferences > customize > events notifications

You can also do this by right clicking the contact and going plus options then new event notification.
