any Operating System geniuses? by ginjaninja405 on 10-22-2007 at 10:40 AM

i was wondering whether someone could tell me how to install an operating system on to a partition ive made, without having to burn a disc, because i have the operating system .iso im sure there is a way without having to do it externally.

Virtual drive.

download Daemon tools

Once it's running, right click the icon is system tray > Virtual CD/DVD-ROM > Device > Mount image and then select the iso.

how would that work when you need to boot from it?

the only thing I can come up with is install vmware > create new vm > set drive as the partition > install to it, but I don't know what complications might come up since it's not a proper installation

but what abuot OSx86, ya see, you cant mount the image in the virtual drive and install it, because its not compatitble with Windows operating system. Therefore it wont boot any media/installer to get it going. i need to install from a boot up, but boot up into my OSx86 installer. Any ideas?

Thats quite a good idea. Although using that, surely i could put my media into a seperate partition? because that way, i can boot from that partition, and then install into a DIFFERENT partition?

Thanks for your word anyways, it has helped.

i use Acronis OS selector so im sure i'll think of something.

cheers,

Sam

I'm sure your operating system came on a CD/DVD if you bought it from a store. Otherwise may I ask what's wrong with simply burning it to a CD, seems like a lot of trouble to avoid using a CD?

For osX86 support I have to direct you to

http://forum.insanelymac.com/
InsanelyMac Forum

and

http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/
Hackint0sh

insanely is more general help and stuff, hackintosh is more for advanced osx86'ers and developers (but members will still help out usually) , a lot of people moved to hackintosh when insanely 'sold out' and started to censor people and edit posts to completly change their context (see Semthex's Blog http://semthex.com ).

They lost a lot of staff and respect, BUT it does seem to have sorted itself out a bit now.

I'd still recommend it as a starting point :)

There are tutorials on insanely for moving a VMWARE installation to a native hard-drive so look there.

it means i can use trial & improvement , coz ive already tried this, and installed it onto a DVD, and it didnt work, and that was 4.7 GB down the drain. i want a way that doesnt use any extra resources.

Well you mount it and goto install. You then select what partition you want to use and use it. The install copies all the files you need to that partition. Once it gets to a certain percent, the computer will restart and boot into the Windows Setup and keep installing.

You can't install it by mounting it. What are you going to do when it reboots?

RE: any Operating System geniuses? by Jarrod on 10-23-2007 at 07:32 AM

make an ms dos startup disk
my computer> right click> format> ms dos boot disk
extract the iso onto your hard drive
the navigate to the location of the setup file
worked all the time in 98;)

The install files get saved to the hdd..? I have done it hundreds of times.. I'm guessing you haven't even tried.

i haven't tried it but, windows xp needs the cd after a boot they don't get saved to the hard disk unless the setup unpacks the whole disk, so i think your better off using some sort of command prompt

If you want to install Linux from Windows without burning a CD, you're going to either need a powerful boot floppy (unlikely to find one these days) or a bootable USB key.

There's a post about it here somewhere already.

Be a man, use a CD-RW disk and re-use it until you learn to do it right ;o

RE: any Operating System geniuses? by aNILEator on 10-23-2007 at 09:09 PM

or in his case a DVD-RW :P

but yeah DVD's are piss cheap for huge stacks so not really that much you're losing :-\

Okay, to clarify everything, im trying to install OSx86 and the websites dont specify the parts i need to hear, like when you boot up... or what program to use when burning... or how long you should wait for something to happen when you try booting!

Thats why i turned to you guys because i know i get structured responses :)

Anyone got an easy step-by-step, i understand all the keywords, its just it never works for me :( ive had two different install images as well.

anyone? help?

RE: any Operating System geniuses? by andrewdodd13 on 10-24-2007 at 02:48 PM

If you want OS X x86, then buy a Mac.

What you're doing is almost certainly illegal.

And you also need to install the images to second hard drive, if I remember correctly, you can't use a partition. :P

RE: any Operating System geniuses? by Jarrod on 10-24-2007 at 06:43 PM

just make sure you pay for the copy of os x you actually use
