Yeah, I am using the highest resolution on my computer, and I find those buttons really very small, and I'm spending too much effort to concentrate on them when necessary. Can you enlarge it? See my screenshot.

Maybe firefox style tab arrows would be more to your liking? one each side?

You can always use Ctrl+Tab to cycle through for the time being. I'm sure that Patchou will look over this with the new UI for 4.50
