mine broke recently, and it will apparently cost over $300 to repair. since there is no point in wasting that much on a 2 year old crappy laptop, I though I might as well buy a new one. I have been searching for over an hour now, but can't find anything decent with my limited budget. RE: need some help finding a laptop by djdannyp on 12-29-2007 at 09:55 AM
this site will let you pick options for each component (like you've listed) in a very easy manner RE: need some help finding a laptop by ShawnZ on 12-29-2007 at 09:59 AM

quote:/take flame_bait I think you're looking at at least £450 for a 64-bit processor. It may be cheaper in the States / Canada, but it's ~$900USD. You'll have to work out $CAD yourself... Try eBay if all else fails. RE: need some help finding a laptop by Mike on 12-29-2007 at 11:48 AM Also, why an 64bit processor when you're going to have only 1GB of RAM? quote:Even if he has a 64bit processor it doesn't mean he will use a 64bit OS (I for example have a 64bit processor with 2GB of ram, and I suppose you are referring to the 4GB limit of 32bit operating systems). Many of the processors today are 64bit even if they are used with 32bit operating systems. RE: need some help finding a laptop by ShawnZ on 12-29-2007 at 04:51 PM
quote: but why does he *need* a 64-bit processor? and why does it have to be AMD? amd are kinda shit... RE: need some help finding a laptop by Shippo on 12-29-2007 at 06:22 PM
He said he would prefer AMD, doesn't have to be. RE: need some help finding a laptop by Steven on 12-29-2007 at 06:53 PM HP Compaq 6510b no dual dvd burner though RE: need some help finding a laptop by prashker on 12-29-2007 at 06:58 PM

quote: Better stack floating point performance? Cleaner virtualisation architecture? Maybe it's something to do with pipeline depth, power usage, or I/O? Maybe it's an ideological thing? Why 64 bit? Maybe he'd like to be using it once 64 bit applications start coming out? I saw NewEgg had an awesome Lenovo for US$700 the other day. It's a real shame they don't do international delivery. I was going to hit them up for a shiny new hard drive. RE: need some help finding a laptop by Shippo on 12-30-2007 at 12:40 AM
quote: Your guess is as good as mine, I personally prefer Intel myself over AMD. As for 64-bit technology, I'd have no use for it at the moment. I still hear some drivers and programs don't run properly on 64-bit for whatever reason. (only on a 64-bit OS though, not 32-bit) Many options for a laptop, it's just a matter of piecing them together to get what you want, for whatever use out of them. Each person has their preference to what they want in a computer. RE: need some help finding a laptop by roflmao456 on 12-30-2007 at 01:43 AM if you budgeted ~$1500, get one of those nice HP laptops with a huge screen RE: need some help finding a laptop by Supersonicdarky on 12-30-2007 at 03:21 PM
quote:why do you prefer intel? just because. same with amd for me. and it seems like amd has more 64bit processors than intel (don't quote me on that though). And speaking of 64bit, it's because it's the future, like 32bit surpassed 16, 64 will eventually surpass 32. Buying a 64bit cpu will just help it progress. quote:are they 64bit or not? its not as easy to tell as with amd and no, i don't trust you with my laptop ;p RE: need some help finding a laptop by Shippo on 12-30-2007 at 04:18 PM
Couple friends of mine experienced AMD for themselves and quite a bit of their processors overheated. Plus, they told me that AMD is mainly for gaming and not necessarily good at multi-tasking. That's what they told me. RE: need some help finding a laptop by vaccination on 12-30-2007 at 05:53 PM By the time 64bit takes over 32bit the processor will be out of date anyway RE: need some help finding a laptop by ShawnZ on 12-30-2007 at 06:04 PM
quote: I prefer intel because core wipes the floor with amd's entire lineup? also, all the core processors are 64-bit. also, 64-bit serves no real benefit other than to support >~3gb of memory. in fact, 64-bit applications will use more memory than the exact same application compiled as 32-bit, because pointers have to be twice as long. |
