Freshly installed Windows Vista Ultimate (again) yesterday, so there CAN'T be much that can of gone wrong between now and then. When I go to set my default background, (doesn't matter what it is), it will stay as the background until I either sign out, or close messenger. When I log back in, no background. It doesn't even think it's the default. The same applies if I just set a particular background for a single contact.

So I tried downgrading from WLM 8.5 to 8.1. No success. Tried uninstalling StuffPlug, as I had a very strange incident with it yesterday (see the StuffPlug bugs for what happened there). No success. I tried deleting the Messenger folder at <username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft. No success. I tried pasting in my Messenger folder I'd backed up from Windows XP a while ago to the aforementioned location. It has all my settings and EVERYTHING. Still no success. Kinda running low on ideas here now. Google yields nothing and the http://support.live.com page is "having issues" so I can't really contact them right now.

So yeah any more ideas?

Well I just installed Vista onto a virtual machine and backgrounds seem to work fine, so I'm just gonna format (AGAIN!!) and hope for the best...pity no-one knew what the problem was - still! Thank goodness for backups if anything goes wrong.
