I have seen my SVCHOST.exe jump before but what the hell would cause that massive memory usage?

I dunno, but it might have something to do with BitDefender right below it, also using quite a bit.

Yer, i exited BitDefender and thats back running low, but svchost.exe didnt drop.

How about try rebooting? that will guarantee to get rid of it, but won't find the source.

Yeah thats precisely why i will not reboot, it is only a temporary fix, i don't want to reboot everytime it spikes. Is it an important process that i cannot "end" or what?

If you use the Sysinternals/Microsoft tool Process Explorer you can hover over the svchost.exe process and it will tell you which services are running under that process. That may help you pinpoint the problem service.

Thank you very much, i managed to find the problem, and in fact MeEtc was correct, the BitDefender Threat Scanner was absolutely swallowing everything, that is one massive memory leak though.

You don't need Process Explorer: just show the PID columns on Task Manager's Processes tab and Services tab, and the rest follows logically ;)

RaceProUk: Would you mind posting a screenshot of what you're referring to? I have a feeling it's Vista only since i can't find a services tab in XP's task manager.

Services > View > Select Columns > PID
