RE: Software for a new computer by Th3rmal on 03-12-2008 at 04:55 AM

Well it depends on what the computer is being used for...

RE: Software for a new computer by Hotdeal on 03-12-2008 at 05:00 AM

Just in general
Some good useful programs

RE: Software for a new computer by Voldemort on 03-12-2008 at 05:01 AM

RE: Software for a new computer by Volv on 03-12-2008 at 07:43 AM

Don't download programs for the sake of downloading programs. Just download what you need, when you need...

Agreed.

Although i download what i need, when i need and now after about 3 or 4 years of no re-formatting my pc is as slow as a turtle. I suggest not downloading things just because you can, but seeing what you ACTUALLY need, and not something thats going to be used once then thrown away or uninstalled, and downloading it. Otherwise your computer will start slowing down and causing you problems real fast, like mine did.
RE: Software for a new computer by Jesus on 03-12-2008 at 09:26 AM

just install what you used most on your last pc

maybe an office suite?
openoffice.org is free ;)
or did you mean Microsoft Office Enterprise in your first post?

Or you could just suggest some programs like he asked. Who knows he might find your suggestion very useful.

Maybe something that tweaks the OS..? I used Winbubble to tweak my Vista install. Can be downloaded here. Obviously this is just for Windows Vista.
RE: Software for a new computer by matty on 03-12-2008 at 11:04 AM

Forget what everyone else is saying go nuts!

Get like the Lop.Com Toolbar, Smiley Central, New.Net lol clearly I am kidding and if you take this advice I may have a tendency to point out the newbness.

Everyone is right don't download just for the sake of doing it.

Be smart, save your bandwidth! (lol sounds like an ING commercial).

There was a decent thread about programs like this, but I can't find it.

would it have been that?
RE: Software for a new computer by Joe on 03-15-2008 at 03:05 AM

Nah. It was newer. It was probably put into T&T and pruned though.

RE: Software for a new computer by andrewdodd13 on 03-15-2008 at 11:11 AM

I have in all honesty, the bare minimum of kit on this PC - if you exclude Visual Studio 2008 and the DX SDK.

Interwebs
Mozilla Firefox [Web Browser]
Mozilla Thunderbird [E-Mail Client]
uTorrent [Torrent Client]
Windows Live Messenger & Messenger Plus! Live, of course

Media
ImgBurn [For burning ISOs and also just making CDs/DVDs]
iTunes [Cause I have an iPod :p]
K-Lite Codec Pack [For watching movies]
QuickTime [It's installed with iTunes]

Office
Mozilla Sunbird [Calendar]
FoxIt PDF Reader [It's less bloated than Adobe Reader, but has No Fx (Firefox) Integration]
OpenOffice.org 2

System
CCleaner [De-junker]

You could probably get away without Sunbird if you're on Vista. Also, I prefer OpenOffice to Microsoft Office, no particular reason though. [Except how much disk space Office 2007 uses!]

RE: Software for a new computer by Volv on 03-17-2008 at 11:56 AM

Office 2003 > 2007, Microsoft went all weird(er than usual) on us with 2007.

RE: Software for a new computer by Th3rmal on 03-17-2008 at 12:12 PM

i like 2007 better, but now we have to learn how to navigate the options as they have completely changed the look...

i agree with you there...the GUI isn't everything, but then again on 2003 i don't like the "draw here" box whenever you select something, annoys the hell out of me :/

is there anyway (besides selecting another drawing object before drawing a new one) to get rid of that box?
RE: Software for a new computer by andrewdodd13 on 03-17-2008 at 08:35 PM

Something like Options -> General -> Use Drawing Canvas or similar.

[b]I would Suggest You To Install These Stuff;

Security;

1) A Good Antivirus ( Depending On Your Specs ) I Would Recommend Kaspersky, Windows Live One Care Or Avg Professional

2) If You are Using IE7 Download IE Pro, Which gives you a huge number of various functions and block every ad and it is the most professional addon for IE and FREE :)

3) Advanced WIndows Care = To Keep Your COmputer Optimized, Fast Enough, With No problem :)

4) You Can Use Tune Up Utilities 2008 Instead of Advanced Windows Care which actually gives out more function

5) You Can Have CCleaner To clean your computer from Little Spywares, Ads In just a basic mode not in advanced like above.

For Media;

1) I would recommend you to use Winamp to play like Music

2) Install a codec pack not to have issues with Different kind of media types. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack For Xp And Vista Codec Pack For Vista

For Office;

1) Install Office 2007, The Best One :) If You cant afford it Try to install The Openoffice Freebie Software. The benefit of 2007 is it looks awesome much more simple the way it looks is stylish and it just includes everything you need to have. It doesnt look as boring as 2007 in contrast It is awesome :)

For Internet Browsers;

1) I Love Internet Explorer Within the registry tricks I've Made and With the addon Internet Explorer Pro...
But You can go for Apple Safari Which is a cool browser tho doesnt look really good as good as it i in Mac
I would recommend you to go for Mozilla Firefox If you are an Anti IE Person as well. It is customizable, Skinnable, Very Cool feautres on it, Faster than the stock IE :)

This is pretty much Most things you might want to have on your computer to enjoy :)[/b]

RE: Software for a new computer by kurt75 on 05-14-2008 at 03:29 PM

and talking about Security I suggest using Simp Lite to encrypt all your messenger conversation (with the contact who use simp lite too)

RE: Software for a new computer by Voldemort on 05-14-2008 at 03:47 PM

Yeah, i'd like you encrypt the important conversations that take place in messenger

"sup?"
"nm u?"
"same, bored"

Word processors shouldnt be eye candy. If you think a word processor looks boring, just wait until you get to the writing part :p
