WLM's message history files need an XSL file, name of it is MessageLog.xsl, to display them properly.

Move the file you received from your friend to where you save your WLM message histories, generally it is My Documents>My Received Files\youremail\History. If you don't see that location in your computer then it may be because you don't save your WLM message histories. To enable it go to Windows Live Messenger's menu>Tools>Options>Messages tab>Messenger History section. Tick the related option for saving histories and modify the save location if you want. Now press OK.

Now open a new conversation window with someone in Messenger, send something then close the convo window. Now WLM must place the required XSL file in the save location.

Now you can paste your message history file to that location and open and read it.

all mylog files are html the person that sent it to me is using msg plus! is there a reason it's an xml file and not html?

WLM's chat logs are in a XML format, aren't they?

If your friend sent you a .xml chat log (which is a WLM chat log, not a Plus! chat log), you need to copy/move the file to where your WLM message history is, usually:

quote:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_Name\My Documents\My Received Files\Your_Name\History

Because it requires the MessageLog.xsl file to read it. Now you can open the chat log your friend sent you.
