"Clip Show" episodes by NiteMare on 04-30-2008 at 01:08 AM
i've recently noticed abit of a trend
in meny TV series, i've noticed that there is usually 1 "clip show"* per season, usually near the end of that season
what is the usual reason for these episodes, i usualy find them boring because they offer no real new information
Opinions? Discussions?
* For those that don't know, a "clip show" is an episode in a series that doesn't really progress a storyline, and consists of flashbacks to previous episdes, wrapped up in a small storyline such as memories, flashbacks, tirals and so on...

writers are lazy. provides a new episode with little effort. networks are greedy. simple as that

They're used to catch up people who jumped in the middle of the season to let them in on the storyline.

That but also to remind people certain details linked to the current show that some poeple may not have thought to have anything to do together.

Actually, the show has had to run for at least a few series before it can start making clip shows. Seriously, a one series old show airing a clip show? Example: Futurama lasted for four seasons, and never aired a clip show. Hell, the only clips showed from earlier episodes were from the Pilot episode. Those were purely flashbacks.
Additionally, some clip shows are actually quite entertaining, because the writers manages to reveal some new information based on past events. Not always though, sometimes the clip show is purely because of lazy writers. Like on the Simpsons. But as far as the Simpsons goes, I don't blame the writers, that show have used up every joke it could every possibly do. But I guess the show must go on...
But a "clip show" can also be an indicator whether or not the show have jumped the shark.

Not True actually, Example: Stargate SG-1, Season 1 Episode 20 - "Politics" (clipshow)

Well, Stargate is a bit of a fail. So I guess it is the exception to the rule.

Really? I suppose you think a lot of other shows are good just because they are long running as well? You realise that is not why a show is kept on air? It is because it gets viewers, and viewers means better advertisement space, more advertisement means more money for the broadcasting companies. They don't give a shit about quality.
Point in case: Firefly. Awesome Science-Fantasy ever to be aired as a show, only lasted one season.
Stargate is utterly fail. Did you see the plot? Ugh!

the plot was going throught the stargate in attempt to find way to defet the Goa'uld and in later seasons the Ori
actually watch a show before you critique it

I did and it sucked! The entire basis is flawed and based illogical concepts. You could archived a similar basic concept of a science-fantasy with just a certain about fixes. Stargate is never something that impressed me. And its fictional language(s)? What unoriginality, put some creativity in it, bastards.
