If you want a family-friendly console get a Wii. It's a brand new gaming experience which attracts many casual gamers. If you want a system with good graphics and a large library of games get a XBOX 360. Even though I personally think it's collection of games mostly consists of shooters. It's online is decent too even though you have to pay for it. Playstation 3 is costly but worth the deal, as it comes with a Blu-Ray DVD player, but it's collection of games isn't that good right now. It's graphics are great though.

You also forgot to mention that the PS3 has free online play.

Had a look and on some games you can get 8 on the PS3 if you connect another controller via USB and not using bluetooth.

Convenient? The Wii is the smallest and makes little noise.
But you need a fairly larger area to play it in...

For what you're looking for get the XBox 360.
You could get the PS3 for Killzone 2, Resistance, MGS4, etc..
