my microphone works, iill start with that. i know this because it works in msn and even in the STEAM friend chat but when i play garrys mod the microphone just wont pick up my voice. why?

You just need to change the settings. Make sure the input is selected as the microphone in settings (presuming there are settings). Try changing things around, only thing I can suggest.
There's a big Garry's Mod section on Facepunch Studios (Forums), maybe they know more about it and other people have had the same thing happen to them.
