Which one? by Nathan on 09-03-2008 at 09:04 PM

Hey,

I'm buying a new laptop in a few days. And I have a few choices (alienware ftw :P). Basically I am wondering whether to get one of the following:

320GB 7200rpm With free fall protection
OR
400GB 5400rmp without free fall.

Im almost certain about the 320 one having a better "specs/space ratio".

So, the 320 or 400?

Thanks :)

RE: Which one? by prashker on 09-03-2008 at 09:20 PM

320GB one....5400rpm is scrotum bad :p

And plus it ahs FreeFall protection, whatever that is.

But if you're posting this just for no reason knowing well that you'll need 400GB because it's more space, dunno :p

RE: Which one? by Stigmata on 09-03-2008 at 09:30 PM

Can't you tell us the rest of the laptop's specs and prices?

RE: Which one? by ipab on 09-03-2008 at 10:02 PM

I must say that after being a computer tech for the past 3 years and dealing with customers' broken laptops, I would definitely go for the free fall protection. You'd be surprised how easy laptop HDDs crap out.

RE: Which one? by andrewdodd13 on 09-03-2008 at 10:21 PM

Yeah, go for the 7200RPM one.

If the shock-resistance actually works, it won't make a blind bit of difference if you actually drop the damned thing: The screen will crack, and they are £100-£200 to replace, depending on size.

Alienware m15x (I cba to type out the whole spec) but its 2k

And yeah it has "g-sensors" which lock the needle agaisnt the platter to stop it scratching or something :P

RE: Which one? by Adeptus on 09-04-2008 at 04:57 AM

It's a case where you need to decide what your priorities are.

The 5400rpm drive should give you 25% more space, better battery life and lower noise (including fan noise).

The 7200rpm drive should be expected to give better performance, although it would be easier to comment on that if we knew exactly what drives we are talking about (some higher aerial density 5400rpm drives easily tie 7200rpm models).

RE: Which one? by Nathan on 09-04-2008 at 11:49 AM

Yeah there is 5400 hybrid which is very similiar to 7200rpm. But yeah how much battery life do I save with 5400?

It's a samsung I think, all it says on the site is:
320GB 7200 RPM SATA with Free Fall Protection [+£201]
400GB 5400 RPM SATA [+£176]

Yeah as you can see, the 320 is slightly more expensive.

RE: Which one? by Kenji on 09-04-2008 at 01:02 PM

Alienware sucks.. and why do they think its ok to charge £200 for a 320GB HDD?

Why not get a thinkpad for half the price?

Thinkpads are horrible :/ I really don't like them. (that's just my opinion)

Anyway new question, which one (considering its only .1ghz different and 3mb cache - is that alot more)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8300 2.4GHz (3MB Cache 800MHz FSB) [+£99]
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB) [+£166]

Thanks :)

EDIT, oh and dazzy they charge less for more storage:
Single Drive Configuration - 120GB 7200 RPM SATA with Free Fall Protection [Standard]
Single Drive Configuration - 160GB 7200 RPM SATA with Free Fall Protection [+£78]
    Single Drive Configuration - 250GB 7200 RPM SATA [+£154]
Single Drive Configuration - 320GB 7200 RPM SATA with Free Fall Protection [+£201]
    Single Drive Configuration - 400GB 5400 RPM SATA [+£176]
    Single Drive Configuration - 500GB 5400 RPM SATA [+£249]

So actually for £200 I can get 400GB but its only 5400RPM

Well, if you want to buy something that has so many problems then go ahead.

you can pick up and 7200 RPM 320GB drive for around £120, same goes for a 5400RPM 400GB drive.

Had, teething problems :), I Was aware of that thread. Believe it or not I've been waiting for one of these babies for months. And It's not as bad as it used to be.

Anyway I'm set for a alienware so I'm not changing. And I swear your a thinkpad advertiser :/

Im not. Its just that thinkpads are one of the most reliable brands (Ignoring the SL series). They are built to last, simple as that.

Enjoy your ugly and overpriced alienware when you get it.

If you can afford it, get the t9300. though there isnt that much of a performance gain according to this (To me anyway).

Yeah, and they also look like they're from 1930. And I prefer customization, and choose what I want, I believe the thinkpad doesn't do that.

And the t9300, does seem to have slightly better

On the other hand - unless you're actually made of money - when you actually have the laptop you'll soon realise that the sheer prices weren't actually worth it.

I have a £500 laptop from 4 years ago which I still use - the higher spec ones at the time would not be all that much faster these days.

In the hard-disk area, the truly best idea is to go for a small HD - like 120GB or so, that way you can then just pick up a WD Passport 320GB for like £80...

And in CPU intensive stuff you should actually see a large increase in performance with a bigger cache (double the cache is pretty sweet), so if you are going for the best of the best then buy the T9300.

But they where! The acer is future proof for what I need. It has "slot in bays" for extra batterys, cd/blu-ray drives, hard drives etc.

No, I don't even use my WD 500gb hdd at the moment. I use a laptop because I like using it anywhere I want.

HDD protection is designed to protect your data. In most cases you will still have to repair the unit after a drop, the HDD protection is merely there to ensure the data is still there after the repair.

A 9800GT is just an 8800GT with triple SLI support.

All I will say on the matter.

Agreed, sometimes I feel like buying something for the sake of buying it, or that I have wanted it for a long time. At that point, the cost is immaterial to me :).

it's*

So is my custom built desktop, and it was at least half the price of Nathan's new laptop(if you bought the parts now it'd be even cheaper). Better specs too.

Not to mention, paying 1k for a brand name is ridiculous, ffc found same spec laptop for £900.
RE: Which one? by Nathan on 09-09-2008 at 09:57 PM

But it looks like shit. Another main factor is smartbay on the alienware which no other laptops have. Also its fully user upgradeable, slot new gfx card in, cpu etc no problem.
plus it doesnt have the bling factor and the cool lights lol. (8)

RIGHT, that must be why Alienware does not dominate the laptop market. DOH!

Lets put it this way :

Alienware = Overpriced with an alien skull, some lights and a wannabe design.
Vaio = Overpriced with no alien skull, good looking design.
Most brands = Reasonably priced, no skull, different lights and good looking design.

I hope you enjoy your laptop but I also would like to think that futurely you'd handle money more wisely. Especially, money that is not yours.

It's too heavy, runs too hot, and dies way too soon without AC power to seriously be considered a laptop. These things are just small form factor PCs.

RE: Which one? by Felu on 09-14-2008 at 01:09 PM

Nathan, you sure could spend as much as you want on whatever you want to buy. But its really stupid on your part paying so much money for those specs. Thats just wasting money as you could get something equivalent or better, both in terms of specs and performance/quality, than that for a much lower price. This way you're just spending more than required and thats literally wasting.

And what else but stupid should I call someone who pays almost double of the actual cost? That still counts even if you're Warren Buffett. Money needs to be spent carefully, even if you're filthy rich.

RE: Which one? by andrewdodd13 on 09-14-2008 at 03:04 PM

I have to point out, that buying any sort of high end Intel processor at this point is silly what with Nehalem coming out in October / November... =\

And rated battery life is never correct. With the power draw that that laptop will have, you'll be looking at a seriously chunky battery for 4 hours.

Me, I've just spent £400 on a whim for an Eee with a VX Revolution, WD 250GB Passport and 2GB RAM for it, so I can't really say anything about dodgy spending. :P

RE: Which one? by Nathan on 09-16-2008 at 06:14 PM

its ok alienware have said i can upgrade the processor and its not 4 hours rated, thats what aw users have repotred (it has 2 gfx cards an intel intergrated and the 8800gt . to save battery i switch to the intergrated one cool isnt it)

Several things:

1) It does not have two graphics card - it has one. The Intel thing is a built in chipset and hence is not actually a graphis card

2) You have to reboot to switch modes, which is a pain in the arse (my HP has this "feature") - especially since the Intel graphics suck so hard.

3) According to reviews I read it gets 2-3 hours on low power mode, which makes much more sense. My Eee has a 30W power supply, and hence must draw a lot less power. The battery is a 6600mAhr, and it maxes out around 5hrs 30.

Edited footnote: Do not believe what a products forum members say, ever. They are on that products forum because they are fan bois. Head over to Mac forums to see what I'm on about :refuck:
RE: Which one? by Nathan on 09-16-2008 at 10:50 PM
