how do i change so that i can read the other persons message they are sending me. with one of my contacts, there message is in symbols, so i cant understand what the are saying.

copy it and paste it into notepad

Copy the symbols and paste them into notepad. They might appear there if they are unicode characters.

ok, that did work, but do i have to do that all the time just to talk to my friend. isnt there a way i can change the setting?

Messenger Plus! Live offers a font override feature, that allows you to set a custom font for your contacts. You can only override the font for all contacts, however.
To override your contacts' font:
Messenger Plus! Live Preferences -> Conversations tab -> Formatting -> Recieved messages font
