.dll file problem by Reaper on 11-30-2008 at 03:27 PM
There is a .dll file in the System32 folder called ntshrui.dll that is giving me some problems. When using WLM an error pops up saying:
"C:\Windows\system32\ntshrui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error...."
I havn't installed or uninstalled anything for it to stop working. I checked the file and it was 0kb. Also, because I am running Vista I can't copy another version of the file in there.
I used sfc /scannow, but it said it found a corrupt file but couldn't fix it. I checked the log and it was ntshrui.dll.
I think it has also messed up a few of my shortcuts.
Does anyone know how to tackle this?

Nope. I'm guessing I should have it in then.

I thought that it would ask you to insert it if it needed it?

It didn't ask me. I ran it again with the cd in but there was no difference.

just because it says "access is denied" doesn't mean you can't do it
go into the permissions, make yourself the owner of the file, and give yourself permission to delete it.

I've done that but it doesn't let me copy it over

Delete it offline: Boot from your Vista DVD. Once you're in, press Shift-F10 to open cmd.exe
Try deleting it from there.
You should also place another copy from there.

I managed to copy it over. I booted in safe mode and took control of the file again then just replaced it.
