Happy New Year everybody!

It’s now official, Microsoft has released the final version of Windows Live Messenger 2009 on the Live web site. That’s about time. It took more than a year of beta versions to get to this new release but it was worth the wait. Of course, it means Messenger Plus! needs a final update too and I’ve got good news: I just saved a bunch of mon… I mean, the beta version available in the Download page has been updated to support the new Messenger. The new build number is 353. Even better, Messenger Plus! Live 4.80 will officially be released before the end of the month :-) .

Two reasons pushed me to refresh the public beta before doing a final release: first, the sooner the better. I know many of you were wondering what would happen with Messenger add-ons with the new Messenger and this beta it meant to be somehow reassuring. After all, everything is fully functionnal again, including emotion sounds, scripts, skins, logs, colors, event notifications, as well as the hundred of other features&options offered in the software. Secondly, I thought some developers may like to benefit from the research I had to do during the past few weeks in the windows files of Messenger; more precisely, in UIB data files.

To make a long story short, UIB files (resource type "4010" for those who know what I’m talking about) can be entirely decoded and re-encoded by Messenger Plus! and this functionnality is offered to every other add-ons and patches that needs it. So, if you’re the developer of a program that requires to modify the windows’ files of Messenger (previously "4004" and "4005"), download the latest version of the Skinning Documentation and read the new "Encoding and Decoding UIB" section in “Specialized Subjects”. Three pages of documentation have been written to explain how to decode and re-encode UIB files in your application in a matter of minutes.

I hope this new version of Plus! will be useful, for end-users and developers alike. If you have anything to say about the new features, have comments, suggestions, or things to talk about in general, don’t hesitate to post on this forum.

I prefer labelling things differently when it's beta. This way, when people will talk about having 4.80, there won't be any doubt if it's beta material or not.

Microsoft today started forcing users of the first public Windows Live Messenger 2009 Beta to upgrade to last month's Release Candidate (v14.0.8050.1202).

Plus! users will find that the add-on is incompatible with this build, but Patchou has let us know he's releasing a public beta of Messenger Plus! Live 4.80 tomorrow that will work with the RC! You can either wait or uninstall your Beta using ZapMessenger and then install Windows Live Messenger 8.5 for use with Plus! 4.70.

The final version of Messenger Plus! Live 4.80 will be released in about two weeks and thanks to Patchou going through a few hoops, it will still support skins!

A question for you folks, Plus! menus, are they now available only through the main menu? There's no Plus! button beside the Mail button. Is this the way it should be or is something wrong with my installation?

No, this means that there's something wrong with your installation.

Did you do a clean installation of Windows Live Messenger before installing Plus? As I know that you'd been messing around with the version of Messenger by reshacking it

OK, thanks for your answer, no I didn't do a clean install, but I will now. At least now I know there's something wrong on my end. Although, I have installed the new WLM on my brother's notebook, and he had 8.5 before that, yet he still doesn't have the Messenger Plus! button beside the Mail button.

YES!! I'm back in the business, oh how I missed my messenger plus, it was hard to live without it *workships Patchou* thank you, thank you, thank you! ^^

I got the bug of the msn menus covering the first tab button but it is enough with disable to show the msn menus for now, is nothing serious ^^

About the messenger plus button besides the mail button I don't have it neither, the only button related to plus in the contact list is the one of the scripts.

mate the background just colorize itselft with the color the windows have... so if the color is so dark... the tabs color will be so...

Many of you guys are using the leaked version of Messenger Plus! Live... and that's why are you having inconsistences with icons and colors...

YOU SHOULDN'T USE THE LEAKED VERSION (352)!!! PLEASE UPDATE IT TO THE PUBLIC VERION (353)!!!

if you aren't sure what version do you have write (!VER) in a conversation windows or just go to the about window in the contextual menu...

it works great patchou, i just have 1 little problem: when opening and closing groups it takes longer than before especially in groups that have lots of colored nicks. i hope you can fix that for the official release

The developer of that skin will have to update it first, which takes time. This counts for every skin.

There will be a very limited number of Live Messenger 2009 skins for a while, but the number will grow over time.

The biggest problems aren't scenes, but the backgrounds =X
The contact list, for example, has about 4 different background for 4 different positions

Hi all!

I have the following symptoms and need an urgent, official solution for it!

- Windows XP SP3
- Windows Live! Messenger 8.5.1302.1018
- Messenger Plus! 4.70

1. I tried to install the new Windows Messenger 2009, but after I realized, somehow it always exit after 15-20 seconds without any reason, I uninstalled it. I was clear about that the Plus! isn't compatible (yet) with that version, so I didn't try it to install. It would have been enough for me if the newer MSN would have worked alone.

2. Okay, after that I decided to downgrade back to Windows Live! Messenger 8.5.1302.1018, and after installed Messenger Plus! 4.70 again.

BUT !!!

since that moment I couldn't solve the problem that Plus! never appears as if it would be installed into MSN..

Even if it's in the Add / remove programs list...
You can imagine.. I browsed threads' posts dozen times... but never solved anything..

Other weird reflections:
- since that thing written all above I've paid attention of the effect that when MSN is in the background (okay, now 'without' Plus), and after a while it always starts blinking on the taskbar. Since I always ran MSN WITH Plus, I don't know if it's normal or not.

As I remember, I had the whole same problem two years ago (on another configuration)... and then there wasn't any WLM 9 or something.. and I had to wait until next update of Plus came....

All in all in order to get this big problem solved - not only for me, but as I can see for looots and lots of other people, I guess it's worth to make a test by developers trying this in a fully fresh installed XP OS, and observe it if it's really happening this way.

Well, what you could try is to use the Repair option of Plus!, in Start, Run, "appwiz.cpl", Messenger Plus! Live, Add/Remove, Repair.
If that doesn't help, you could also stick to uninstalling Messenger and Messenger Plus! completely (be sure to create a backup of your data and Plus! settings), using software you find in JK's blog at http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com/.

Scroll bar issues still here, and also the Windows 'frame' appears once you minimise and maximum a chat windows and the contact list.

You can't do this anymore. The colour scheme of the conversation is taken from whatever 'scene' your contact has selected

I meant in conversations; Did they take out the ability to always send an invite to their webcam? I use to be able to even when they didn't have one.

Can the Creator [Patchou?] make MSN Plus allow that?

the scene in conversation will display the scene that your contact has in his contact list with its color too... the ability to colorize your convos is not available anymore... however with skinning of MP!L you can personalize your own convos

I didn't understand the other part of your post sorry... and MSN is a network my friend no a messenger client... you meant Messenger Plus! Live... or if you wanna an abreviation just use Msg Plus! or MP!L...

you could just right click the top part of the convo screen (the bit where the contacts name is) and click on "use the default scene" and then it will show your scene instead of your contacts.

It is already available in Messenger itself, try this, in contact list window, Actions > Video > Show contact's webcam > Select the contact you want to invite to view his/her webcam.

The same thing can also be done on conversations menu > Tools > Use the default scene. However selecting this doesn't apply your scene picture there but only your scene COLOR. Your scene picture is visible only on your contact list.

Messenger for Vista and Windows 7 are the same. Wave 3 just went final. They are working on the eraly stages of Wave 4, but I wouldn't expect to see sometthing anytime soon.

Another month, another version more like it..
Messenger v14.0.8064.206 has just been released...
This is a pain in the butt, just as the newer skins are being releasedfor v14.0.8050.1202 they 'update' messenger to the point where it's a whole new I.M.
And then Patchou has to play catch up with the newer version of WLM, then when Patchou does... surprise, surprise Microsoft releases a brand new version of WLM so that the latest Plus! version is now obsolete... It almost feels like ol microsoft is playing their games... you watch.. soon patchou will have plus! for the latest WLM. One or two months later a new version is out and because we are all techs got to have the latest and the newest, got to see what new little options is in the newest version...
SURPRISE... there is stuff all, apart from changeing the colour of WLM or adding your own picture. But the lastest WLM doesn't feel right it feels .... boreing... You can't revert back because of microsoft's all in one set up installer.. your stuck.. unless u have one of the old messenger's. Its crazy thats all, why can't Microsoft just celaberate with Patchou..
Its a win-win situation...

well the two skin versions I have are compatible with 2009 (9.0) but are not compatable with WLM v14.0.8064.206... I get the warning when change the skins over and when I do restart WLM ..nothing.. all I was doing was waiting for more skins compatible with 2009 (9.0) for v14.0.8050.1202

Which skins are you using? The skins you use probably set their compatibility information too tight.

You can correct this yourself if you like:
*Go to the skin's folder and open up SkinInfo.xml in a text editor.
* You'll see a line line this:

XML code:
<MsgVersion Major="14" Minor="0" Build="8050"/>

* Change that line to only the Major and Minor build:

XML code:
<MsgVersion Major="14" Minor="0" />

* Save the XML file and apply the skin again
