Unable to sign in - Windows Live Messenger 2009 by shades_aus on 03-05-2009 at 12:22 AM

Hi All,

I have been through all the steps suggested here to resolve my sign-in problem.
I even have a fresh install of XP SP3 installed now and still I can't use Windows Live Messenger 9x, even after upgrading from version 8 or a fresh 9 install. I have unfortunatly had to re-install version 8 to use MSN Messenger to even communicate with friends now. I also have Skype and that logs in no problems and does video\audio\phone without a hitch.

What happens is I click on sign in and the little men spin around for 30 seconds, then it takes me back to the sign in button again.
If I am logged on at another PC, it logs me out, so it must connect  for a second and kick me off. I have cheked all settings and tried suggestions from sticky threads in this forum. The Connection Troubleshooter says everything is fine.

I can use the web version, I can sign in to my Live account via Explorer.
When I check connections in Windows Live Messenger, it says everything is ok and I can connect and there is nothing wrong with the server, however, I am not able to stay signed in, it just flashes back to the sign in button.

I upgraded to the new version for the sharing folders and I have had to since remove it with Messenger removal tools i found here and go back to version 8 which, just for argument sake,  logs in just fine.

I have all the windows updates and I am a genuine XP user. I also have .NET 3.5 sp1 installed and working.

I am not sure what else to do and my friends are all on version 9 now and want to do folder sharing etc. Would it have anything to do with my Quad Core AMD CPU? is it compiled for dual or single only perhaps?
Is there and fix for this? are the developers aware of any issues?

Use ZapMessenger, delete the whole Windows Live folder from C:\Program Files and then install Windows Live Messenger from here. Also, Sharing folders has been disabled in the final version of Windows Live Messenger "2009".

Well I tried as you suggested above, re-booted and now I get a box popping up saying
"Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailble. Please try again later
Error code:8007007e"

I ran the Tools / Options / Connection Trouble shooter and it says everything is fine and it can connect. The online Server site also says the service is up and running properly.
Why was sharing folders removed? that's so bad. My friends used it for pictures etc.

Google that error, I'm sure you will find a solution to it there or so. Also, have a look here. As for the sharing folders, it was replaced with Windows Live SkyDrive.

Try

1. Run "sfc /scannow" and restart the computer;
2. Uninstall WLM9 with ZapMessenger;

3. Donwload and install Windows Installer Cleanup Utility for vista;
Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 1.0
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/e...
4. Run the utility, select all itens concerning Windows Live and remove them;
5. Run WLM9 installer again.

Well now i am back to square 1 where the men spin around for a bit, then take me back to the sign in button.
I am also now minus the ATI drivers and TV card drivers, so I guess I'll re-install those but still no luck!
Talk about frustrating.

RE: Unable to sign in - Windows Live Messenger 2009 by shades_aus on 03-06-2009 at 02:04 AM

I also get a window with Microsoft Error Reprting popping up asking me to send the report or not to send. There is no error code however.

Some details I could copy are :

Error signature
AppName: wlcomm.exe     AppVer: 14.0.8064.206     ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512     Offset: 00036eca

There's a lot more than that in the error report but I can't copy and paste.

It still knocks me back to the sign in button.
The funny thing is, If I deliberatly give an incorrect password, it tells me I have the wrong password or email address, so it must be connecting with the server for a second or so to be able to tell me that.
When I use the correct password, it just bumps me out to the sign in again. I don't always get the error report. I tried making another account on the computer and logged in to that only to get the same issue.

Windows Live Communications Platform Error!

Take a look in that thread as there's a couple of potential solutions posted.

Also try completely removing Windows Live Messenger (using Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features on Vista) and then re-install it, it's possible that it didn't quite install properly if the fixes from the above thread don't work

@djdannyp
Thanks for your help, but it is still not working. I deleted my contacts as advised in that other thread you listed, I un installed all instances of the Live software including messenger from Add/Remove programs, ran ZapMessenger and re-installed Windows Live Messenger from the Microsoft site as given on page 1. Once again it just kicks me back to the Sign In button after thinking for say 6 seconds.

I even looked at other threads with different issues.
I just tried http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/F/4/0F4D...s-ship-neutral.cab
However it says I already have a newer version installed

I'm not sure what else to do. I have filled in an error report with Microsoft, I hope they are aware of the issues with this latest version of messenger. I will un-install it, zap it and down load version 8 again. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I guess it's just a buggy program.

Uninstall WLM, delete the folder that is located in your Program Files, then reinstall WLM again.  Used to happen to me as well.

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for your help. I have just tried this and it hasn't worked.
I UnInstalled it from Add/Remove then re-booted, then deleted the Windows Live Directory from Program Files and the contacts list from Local Files. I ran the ZapMessenger proggie as well, did another re-boot, re installed 2009 from the microsoft site and once again MSN just kicked me out to the sign in page.
I then ran MSN Virus Removal, it found nothing so once again I tried version 2008 (build 8.5.1302.1018) and version 8 started working fine.
Whatever they have done from the 2008 version to the 2009 has broken it for me.

This is not a problem on the computer side its to do with the network...
my @msn.com account is down, yet my @hotmail.co.uk is absolutely fine, this is the same on different machines and web messenger.

I hope they solve the problem soon.

I don't get it.

The network troubleshooter says the network is fine, so does the MSN website, reporting there are no server errors.
Not only that, version 2008 is logging in just fine.
