Guys I've had around 11 Lumbar Punctures. I was just wandering if anyone else had one and the reason for it.
And where do you think I got the picture of the spinal needle from?
RE: Lumbar Puncture by Discrate on 04-16-2009 at 11:41 AM
ouch. does it hurt? are you use to it?
RE: Lumbar Puncture by High Speed Chaser on 04-16-2009 at 11:49 AM
Kills even with anaesthetic. I never got used to it.
RE: Lumbar Puncture by prashker on 04-16-2009 at 11:51 AM

What do you mean? If you've had a ton of LPs before, wouldn't you know that?
We know what its for because we've seen a tad bit of House
RE: Lumbar Puncture by Dempsey on 04-16-2009 at 03:53 PM
I've had about 20 of them, during my Chemo.
Had about half under local anaesthetic and half under general and got completely knocked out.
Was cos the Leukaemia cells can hide in the spinal fluid and all of the other chemo only treats the bloodstream.

I think he means "why did you have to have it?".. like the injection, not really asking what is does in general.

Yeah had one of those before when I was younger (than my still very youthful self ) ... They thought I might have Meningitis....
Turns out I didn't, so whoopee for me.

Kinda the same reason, mine was cancer not lukaemia....I only had a couple tho, one under general, one under local
I don't remember much from back then

Lumber Pumcture is mostly used as an aneasthetic during labor.. to numb the lady below the site of punture..
It is also used to draw some samples from the spinal fluids around the spinal cord .. to do some tests (first is to ovbserve the fluids taken out..as color .. blood stain..) .. tests as level of protein .. level of red blood cells and white blood cells.. mainly to check for meningitis (inflamation/infection of the brain membranes)
(finished medical school and year of internship)

Didn't finish reading the thread to notice we already figured what it was for though did you?
Needles are one thing I can't look at. That and knives going into skin. I can get needles, but I won't look, and I can't look at anyone else getting it. The whole cutting skin thing is just odd for me. I can't see it go in, it freaks me out . That is one crazy needle. I'd be quite nervous getting one of those.

RE: Lumbar Puncture by Chrono on 04-17-2009 at 03:00 AM
i've had one and, tbh, it didn't hurt that much.
The picture does look horrible, but you don't see it so it's not that bad

There are different reasons for performing a LP.
Some reasons include diagnosis of diseases and some are to relive pressure on the brain from a build up og spinal fluid.

Sounds like something I had called Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH)/benign intracranial hypertension (BIH)/pseudotumor cerebri (PTC)

Povidone-iodine to be exact.
It felt really really cold when they put it on.
RE: Lumbar Puncture by becca-boots-93 on 03-04-2011 at 08:17 PM
i had one a few weeks ago ... i was terrified because i wasnt told what a lumbar puncture was ... i was told they were going to insert a needle to remove some fluid to test for a bleed on my brain .... i actually thought they were going to stick a needle into my brain to draw the fluid :/
but they took the fluid to test for a brain hemorhage or meningitis... turned out i have meningitis and not the hemorhage thank goodness.
not a pleasant experience at all though
RE: Lumbar Puncture by Arcticwolfx on 03-04-2011 at 10:19 PM
Oh wow becca-boots-93,
that doesn't sound like a happy experience at all. Is your meningitis being treated and showing positive results?
It's treatable but still quite dangerous.. an experience you probably won't forget for the rest of your life.
Fortunately, it isn't your time to go yet. I'm glad you have been diagnosed in time.
