[solved] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-02-2009 at 05:27 PM

Man, EVERY time Apple releases an update for iTunes, they manage to freak me out. This time, when I try to run iTunes, Windows installer pops up, stating that "Windows is configuring iTunes". A progress bar fills, but then a warning shows up: "Installer does not have the required rights to adjust C:\Program Files\iTunes\Acknowladgements.rtf" (pretty loosely translated). Then the progress bar empties again and iTunes is dead.

I tried deleting Acknowledgements.rtf, now I get some new warning:

Error retrieving file protection: C:\Program Files\iTunes\CDDBControlApple.dll
GetLastError: 5

(again, loosely translated).

Could anyone help me on this?

Try completely uninstalling iTunes and the Apple Software Updater and then restart the computer, re-download it from the iTunes website and install it...perhaps also run a registry cleaner between the uninstall and the restart if you want.

I just did what you advised, but no. Still can't access the folder and I still can't run iTunes.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried running the setup as admin? Or maybe went to the iTunes Suport Page?
RE: [?] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-02-2009 at 07:45 PM

Both I did; in fact I am an admin, making it weird that I cannot access the iTunes folder. Double-clicking it gives the following error:

You currently do not have access to this folder.
Click continue if you wish to gain access to this folder.

After clicking continue another error appears:

You do not have access to this folder.
Use the tab Protection
[ = in Properties, it's the 3rd tab from the left] wish to gain access to this folder.

Then I go to Protection. Only an Information icon and the text "You are not authorised to view or alter the authorisation settings of this object" show up :S

The strangest part is: the folders iTunes and iPod are the only ones for which the error gets displayed.

xp or vista?

RE: [?] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-03-2009 at 02:04 PM

Vista SP 1

Isn't there some way to force folder accessibility?

There's one through cmd.exe and also clicking in Folder Properties > Security

Well, this no longer seems to be an iTunes problem, but rather an MS Windows problem. VS 2008 JIT debugger says "Unhandled exception at 0x6ce61040 in iTunes.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation."

QuickWatch (whatever that may be):

6CE61040    CXX0013: Error: missing operator

Anyone got any info on how to solve this?

RE: [?] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-13-2009 at 02:37 PM

SP2? Have Microsoft released another service pack for Windows Vista?

RE: [?] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-13-2009 at 02:59 PM

Yeah I see it now. Unfortunately, it is not available in Dutch (IIAC)

Try taking ownership of the folders and/or files involved.

RE: [?] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-13-2009 at 04:28 PM

Well, I have taken ownership, but it still doesn't work.

Allright, anyone who's got the same problem: get yourself a new PC with 6 gB RAM, 1 TB harddisk and an nVidia GTX 260. That'll solve the problem :D

RE: [solved] iTunes by SmokingCookie on 06-27-2009 at 09:40 PM

Well, the problem with formatting is: you'll lose everythinh, including files you don't wanna lose or (big) applications you'd rather not reinstall because of the looooooong inttallation.

And stop using iTunes means one can no longer synchronise their iPod.

Anyway, the point is that I can now use it agayn; from noTunes back to iTunes :)

Nope. I've got a 1 TB HDD plus my old one :P (which is almost full :O )

But we're drifting off topic now eh :P
